Creating an asset by copying an image like a skin

I was wondering if there was a strategy to take a prop asset, like a sheet of paper, and somehow copy an image to it like an overlay?

Assuming the model is UV mapped you could, for Iray, aply the image to the Diffuse Overlay channel in the Editor tab of the Surfaces pane or you could apply the map instead of the base colour or overlay it on the base colour usign the Layered Image Editor - to access those click the daz icon/nano-thumbnail next to the colour bar for the property.
Even if it is not UV mapped you could add a new Iray Decal Node (from the Create menu), apply the map to that, and project it onto the model.
