What are the Hierarchical Presets?

In D|S 4.8, if I want to save a pose preset, I can choose between just pose preset and hierarchical pose preset. Similarly, if I wish to save a material preset, I can choose material preset or hierarchical material preset. What are these hierarchical presets? Why might I choose a hierarchical pose preset over just a pose preset?

Hierarchical presets let you save pose or material information for all items parented to the figure as well as the figure itself -- so they could include the clothing or hair, for example.
