Thanks Melissa, that is actually how I thought displacement maps worked all this time; using ones with mostly gray where the white and black determine height and depth. I did this render with the displacement set to 12 in the surface parameter though and it still doesn't look anywhere as accurate or clean as the Zbrush one. In fact, it pretty much looks the same at every subD level after 7.

Do you create displacements in Zbrush? If you do, would you mind sharing your export settings? I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong on that end.

I've only exported from Zbrush a couple times and it's been a while, but it worked as expected. I think the standard I used was 4k and it exported using the neutral grey background.

I mostly create height maps these days in Photoshop, which has a neat tool to create height maps from normal maps.

  • This looks like a good topic for @Jay%20Versluis (that is, WP Guru) to do a video on... assuming he hasn't already done one on this.  In fact I'd love to see a video tutorial on this one because this very thing is something I want to do, as well, although in my case I want to use this displacement-map process to make a big person-shaped indent into a piece of furniteu or something... such as might happen on, say, an acceleration-couch in a rocket.
