LIE Makeup turning Model's Faces White - Help?

I looked all over the forums for someone else having this problem, and couldn't find anyone, so any help is appreciated!

I have the Makeup Artist Essentials, LIE Poses and Expressions. I never had any issues with it until recently, and I'm not sure if this is an issue with 4.20 or if it's user error.

Whenever I try to use the makeup, it removes the base color from my model, and gives them a white face (or lips, if it's lipstick), without applying the makeup. When I look inside of the LIE after applying, the makeup isn't there either. It's like when I apply the makeup, it just removes the base color from whatever surface it's meant to modify, and doesn't actually apply anything anymore. I thought it might be an issue with the preview pane, but when the model is rendered, the issue persists (and seems to spread, tbh). This happens with both 8 and 8.1 figures, and has happened with every figure I have tried to use it on recently.

Any suggestions? It's a product I really like, but it's totally ruining my figures when I try to use it.

I don't have the product but you could always try to uninstall and reinstall the product, to begin with. If you're lucky, that might fix the issue.

I gave this a go, but unfortunately no dice. :( Problem is still persisting. I guess I'm out of luck for the moment lol.

If you're using a geoshell, you need to select that and apply makeup to it and not your base model. Think of it as hair and to change hair color, you need to select that instead applying it to your figure. The difference here of course is that if you try and apply a hair color to the base model, nothing happens. If you apply the makeup to your model, it still tries to work and you get a weird white shell.

I did think at first it was an issue with Geoshells, but it doesn't use Geoshells best I can tell, it uses the LIE system only. I did try converting it to a Gen 8 shell just in case, but had no dice there. Unfortunately, I think the root issue is that whenever I go to use it, it completely wipes out my base texture. Almost as if it's missing a file and then bugging out? But I don't get any missing file error messages.

Ok, open the log file and delete everything. Then close it, apply the LIE to a character and then post what the log file says here. Maybe we can figure out where the LIE is going wrong.
  • FenixPhoenixFenixPhoenix Posts: 3,083
Ah, the other thing you can check is if it applies correctly to a character using the Iray Uber shader, rather than on a character using the PBR skin.

Good idea! I hadn't thought to check there - Log reads as such:

At a glance, it doesn't look like anything was missing like I thought there would be? But it does look like it tries to merge an asset but it doesn't work quite right? I was expecting it to try and load something like black.png and then layer that on top. Maybe there's something wrong with the figure asset it's loading? But if so then IDK how to fix that, since I already re-installed the files. Is there something here I am missing?

What happens when you just reapply the character's materials and delete the geoshell?

Have you tried doing this as well? The screenshot of the character you posted used the PBRSkin shader. So it might be set up to create the LIE on the Diffuse Overlay channel (hard to say as the product page doesn't offer a lot of information and I don't own the product) which is a channel found with characters set up with Iray Uber (try a character released prior to Genesis 8.1).

Do other L.I.E.s work? Things like some of the tattoo sets? Have you tried using the L.I.E. editor to apply something manually?

If other L.I.E.s work, it could be the product, if nothing works, it could be something got corrupted in your Studio installation.

  • L.I.E. materials made for the older iRay Uber skin shader don't work well (or don't work at all) with the new PBR skin shader. PBR is differently structured.

Probably you're going to have to apply textures from this L.I.E. pack manually in the layered image editor. To the every texture map.

This is main reason why I don't use the new skin shader. Only thing it brings to the table are skin microdetails which is only useful in very close portraits, but you pay for this added detail with things like L.I.E, some texture overlays and transparency/refraction not working very well.

    Morning!

I took a peek at the files in Studio and it looks like they are not applying the LIE's at all. However, when you resave out the LIE's out they do work properly so it looks like something in the coding is not working properly.
This will need to have a bug report filed on it to see if the PA will update the files. Once they are resaved they do work on both Iray Uber and PBRSkin since it is via the LIE system (I checked lol)

For a quick fix you can resave the LIE's yourself as follows:
    1. In surface Tab select the Face Surface then Layered Image Editor
    2. In the grey box on the right with the texture map click the + at the bottom and "Add Layer"
I usually name the layer as to what it will be loading to help find things easier when I have several layers going on at once.
    3. In the Resource Dropdown you will need to Browse and point it to the PNG file from the Runtime/Textures folder that you need
    4. Make sure the Blend Mode below is set to "Alpha Channel Blend" for this set (you can use any of the Blend Modes for different looks)
    5. Hit Accept to apply the LIE and return to the Main window
    6. Next you will want to Save As/Layered Image(s) Preset

It can take a minute or two to save out each preset depending on how quickly the LIE loads for you.

    Hope this helps!

I have also been having this issue lately. I have been using it for a while and never had a problem until it was updated recently. I used it on other models to see if it was a skin compatibility issue but it's the same straight across the board.

    Hopefully it's resolved soon...

Ok so I had time to look into this, as well as the idea that it has to do with the new Uber skins.

From the same pack, the blush and contour works, and most of the tattoos and other items work that I can tell, though some of them aren't LIE, but I'd say like 80% of things work, and the ones that don't 100% work, they don't do the whole material-removing turn everything to white plastic thing. It's only the makeup that's causing this issue. I tried it on a 8 model and an 8.1.

TBH I don't know how to tell if it's an Uber skin model or not, so I went back and tried it on models I know it worked on in the past, and they do the same thing. Contour works, blush works, but anything else does the weird white plastic thing. Before and afters attached.

This is why primarily I was wondering if it might be something with this version of Daz? Because it used to work, and now all of a sudden it just doesn't. :(

Thank you so much! This is so great! And I'm glad it's not just me. I'll give your fix a try! I did look into the LIE system to see if I could do this, but I couldn't find a step-by step that worked like this. I'll give it a go soon! I will also fill out a bug request too. :) I appreciate you taking the time to do this!

If your surface tab shows "Metallicity Enable", "Diffuse Enable" at the beginning then this is the new PBR skin shader. Old Uber shader starts with Base Mixing drop-down window.

Did anyone get any answers for this? Its not just my LIE layers I bought skin builder & its not working obviously as there is a fault with diffuse in my Daz studio I have reinstalled it all so many times but still doesn't work I can not put any make, masks etc only the ones that  come with that certain model when I try & change from Metallicity to diffuse the diffuse isn't a option I am at loss? I have little knowledge of all this although I first used Daz 12 years ago I never really played with anything else I have always been a drag & drop kind of gal lol I have so much learn

I've been waiting and still no luck.

I noticed it still seems to work on old saved wearable presets I made for some characters. But if I decide to apply anything now it doesn't work at all.

Hope this does get resolved soon.

Saved "Material Preset" doesn't work? Two suggestions one of which might have been mentioned.  (I was getting 'white face' when loading Altern 8 based actors as scene subsets & homemade .png files for LIE.)

1.) Check to see if base image file has been loaded in surfaces tab.  Example:  Face > "GennyActor8Face1001MU.jpg"  -- the file ihasn't been loaded.  Go to parent directory and load missing base file.  Repairs 'white face.'

2.) At least one HD script only supports DS v4.15 or later.  Updates could prevent an encrypted script from loading.  Load original script from a backup or .zip file.  Script should work.

Example:  EZ MakeUP for DAZ -- Update file 2022 --> error, cannot load the script.  Overwrite updated script with the original from purchase date. e.g. 2019.  Works again in DS versions prior to DS 4.15.

Could request ticket, but to to my limited knowledge, tech support cannot help with any version other than whatever the current one is.

Hope you can get it to work!

  • I noticed a similar problem when applying an iray UBER makeup to a PBR base mat but it took me a while to recognize that

I'm facing the same problem. The paths of my textures got confused. Clearing the cache helped me. Press F2 and clear the cache.

Maybe it will be useful for someone.
