I have the toolbar but it's greyed out. Am I missing something?

    Yes greyed out means you have the Iray render engine engaged. It is only for 3delight. For Iray previews you need to change the Draw Style accessed via the little sphere beside the Camera selection bar in the top right corner of the Aux Viewport window.
