[Solved] 101 Expression Library F/M not working - is there a trick I'm missing?
![joanna](https://farnsworth-prod.uc.r.appspot.com/forums/uploads/userpics/411/nJTND3XFIIEUB.jpg)
(I hope this is the right place to ask. This product doesn't seem to have a thread in the Daz PA Commercial Products section)
Some time ago, I got 101 Expression Library with Dials, both for Female and Male, but they don't seem to be working.
Applying most expressions does nothing to the character, and dials are not working either: only a few expressions are actually applied, and only a few dials work.
I thought it might be an issue with some specific characters, so I tested both products with plain G8F i G8M figures and got the same results.
I can't think of anything else, so I'm wondering if I'm missing some trick or doing something wrong.

What character are you trying them on?
G8.1 had a change in how to do expressions, and as default G8 expressions won't work on G8.1, as G8.1 uses FACS for expressions.
You can enable G8 expressions by removing some dummy files.
I'm trying them on basic G8F and G8M and various characters that are also marked 8, not 8.1. So, my problem isn't that those expressions don't work on 8.1. My problem is that they don't work on 8.
Open the Log (Help->Troubleshooting->View Log File)
Delete everything on it and close the log (save when asked)
Close DS, wait a while and open DS again
Load a base G8 figure, and use the expression dials that don't work
Open the log again and save it somewhere you can easily find
Attach the logfile to your post with "Attach a file" above "Post Comment" button, so we can have a look.
Thank you. The log file is attached (I skipped the closing and reopening DS step as it seemed to create a bunch of entries - unless you need them too?).
I loaded base G8 female and used one dial that didn't work for me previously.
Closing and opening would have added information about your system and settings, but to me it looks like there is a problem with your content libraries.
How do you install your content and do you log in to DS?
I install the content through Daz Central onto an external hard drive, and DS is automatically logged in. I suppose I could try unistalling and reinstalling those products in case there was a download glitch or something.
Edit: reinstalling did not help.
Reinstallation didn't help, because (most likely) you have your content installed twice at least some of it. Once by DAZ Central and the second time by DAZ Connect within DS to a completely different location and any DAZ Connect installed content steals priority over the other installation methods, even in cases when the DAZ Connect installed content is corrupted (not unusual) and the other ones would be working.
The default installation/start up process for DS and content is inherently botched and at no point is the user warned about the pitfalls... It's so frustrating...
If one uses external installers (DAZ Central, DAZ Install Manager (DIM) or manual installation) for the content, one should never, ever log in to DS or let DS contact DAZ servers.
Stop logging in to DS and set your startup preferences as in the attachment
In SmartContent, uninstall everything - This will remove the DAZ Connect installed content (that's been installed twice)
Close DS and start it again, did your morphs start working again?
First of all, I wanted to thank you so much for taking your time to help me. I really appreciate it, because after a few months of using DAZ, I still feel like I'm mostly walking blindly around, stumbling upon issues with no good manual at hand.
Indeed. When I first started, the walkthrough prompted me to download and use Daz Studio while being logged into DS was a default option. Moving my content to an external drive was a nightmare too (though done prior to getting the 101 EL, so I don't think it interfered).
I set up the startup preferences as you indicated, but I can't seem to find an option to delete anything in the Smart Content. When I right click on the content, I only get an install option (I attached the screenshot). I even clicked on it to check if there's an uninstall option hiding there, but no, only a prompt to log in.
The ones that are installed with DAZ Connect within DS don't have the circle and arrow on their thumbnails, asking the user to install them (again)
Maybe it's your G8 starter essentials that were installed at some point with DAZ Connect and are now causing the problem.
It seems that G8 Starter is also installed via Das Studio only. I even tried the old "turn it off and on" rule: unistalling the expression packages, switching off the PC and turning it back on before reinstall. It didn't work either, but I suppose it was worth a try.
What does your Content Directory Manager say?
Expand all the paths like in the sample.
There it is.
I don't really use Poser, so I don't know if it's relevant, but I included it just in case.
I'm not surprised it looks like a mess. When I was trying to move my library to the external drive, DS started to have database issues, and I had to reinstall it 3 or 4 times and get DS-specific files (no content) through DIM. After that, I went ahead and installed all of the (previously uninstalled) products via DC. The extra folders are there, but from what I can see just looking at my hard drive, they're empty. Some contain only my local files (poses etc.) I saved.
To be honest, if I could get rid of this mess and start over, I would (I don't mind redownloading and reinstalling my content), but it seems that DS and DC don't have a clear and detailed instructions on how to do things in particular order without causing clashes, they create default folders that you can't set up upon install, and you can only change later, etc. This (and the previous attempt when I ended up reinstalling DS so many times) make me wary of any major actions.
First Create a Folder "D:\My DAZ Connect Library" and set the path to "DAZ Connect Data" in Content Directory Manager to that location.
Remove "C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Daz Connect Library" from "DAZ Studio Formats" in Content Directory Manager
When you navigate in Windows Explorer to "D:\My DAZ 4D Library\Data\". do you have a folder "Cloud" in there, what's inside that folder?
When you navigate in Windows Explorer to "C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Daz Connect Library", do you have other folders in there than "Data"? Does "Data" have other folders than "Cloud"? What does the "Cloud" folder have inside?
If you don't have Poser Content, you can delete all the paths from "Poser Formats" in Content Directory Manager, maybe add the "D:\My DAZ 3D Library" in there
Reinstallation of DS does not help fixing problems with content locations, as DS and content are separate products, DS only needs to know where the Content is installed.
Just a word about Poser content, if you buy any of the older, Generation 4 on back products, you may need those files for Daz Studio to use them. While some have been updated, most are not and rely on the Poser files. The DS files may only provide materials.
I learned this the hard way after having a similar mess caused by DIM, Daz Connect, and newbie ignorance. And then moving my files to external hard drives.
Once more, thank you for taking your time.
Done. Removing the folder from the CDM seems to have broken preview images for some of the content (but not 101 Expressions), but the content itself is still working.
A folder "meta" with products' jpg files and tiny-sized json files.
No other folders than "data". It does have "cloud" folder inside. This meta folder's content differ from the meta folder's content on D, though general content is the same (jpgs and small jsons). Cloud also contains one numbered folder which looks like content folder for terradome or terraluna.
As per memcneil70's advice (thank you!), I'll be careful with deleting. I'll go and check what's in those folders first. Would just moving the content to the relevant folders work, or should I uninstall relevant products (assuming there are any), change the paths in the content directory manager, and then reinstall?
I understand. I was just wondering if wiping the slate clean and starting over would have helped.
Having the Connect directory listed as a Daz Studio Format content directory won't break anything, as far as I know - indeed, if you chnage the Connect directory but make the old one a regular Daz Studio Format content directory (as the application will suggest) the content will still work.
Having the same name for two folders in different places is also not an issue from a technical point of view, though it will be potentially cionfusing for the user since only that folder name appears in the Content Library pane.
So, theoretically, the folder structure should cause no problems except for the confusion... but then, why the 101 Expressions Library products aren't working? :S
Ok, whatever that's installed with DAZ connect, will be in those "Cloud" folders in folders named "1_XXXXX", the X's are the SKU number of those products.
you can check which products they are, to reinstall them with DAZ Central if they have stopped working.
I would even go as far as changing the name of the existing "Cloud" folders to "No_Cloud" and inside DS use the "Refresh Database", which should refresh the thumbnails for the products as it now sees them in "D:\My DAZ 3D Library\Runtime\Support" instead of the "Cloud" folders.
I disagree with Richard, even when having the same folder names would work (when everything is done right), it makes it so much more difficult to fix when things were not correct, especially when you are doing it blindfolded.
Double check that DAZ Central is using the correct path "D:\My DAZ 3D Library" to install content
Yes, as far as I can tell, DAZ Central is using the correct path, though it had to be set up via DIM for some some reason ("paths managed by DIM") and setting up a path through DC causes it to freeze to "no response".
I'm seriously at a loss. Both 101 Expressions sets were installed at the same time as everything else (after the move to the external drive), and since everything else is working correctly (if there were issues with the paths, wouldn't more content or all content be affected?), I'm not sure why this specific product isn't.
Update: now I arrived at the PostgreSQL error which wiped out all of my smart content.
Have you tried restarting you computer?
What does your log say, we need to see what it says about starting up DS.
Yeah, I did, though restarting my PC has yet to fix anything in DS.
And the log is... well, lengthy. See for yourself.
Restarting the computer, closes all the applications that are running, therefore it also ensures there are no other instance of the database running/closing when you try to open DS - This has occasionally been a problem, opening DS while the database is shutting down after DAZ Central ot DIM has been used.
Still at work for about an hour, but two things did immediately jump out... Although they are not the reason for morphs or the database not working, they will have an effect on how DS in general is working and how responsive it is.
1. You have just 16GB's of RAM, out of which just 8.2GB's is available at the time you start DS (way too little)
2. Your GPU drivers are too old for the version of DS you are using, DS says in the log "Please update your display driver (current version 456.71) (www.nvidia.com) to at least 471.41"
I'll look at the log more closely when I get home.
Thank you for having a look. I appreciate your help.
I had stuff running in the background when I opened DS, since I knew I wouldn't be actually using it. It's not to say that I couldn't use more RAM in general (I might have some spare somewhere), but I'm not too concerned, seeing as so far, DS is working an acceptable speed (no lags, etc.) and the renders are 2-3h long max. Often even faster if it's not something complex. Though, I'm sure, in the future I'll want more RAM either way. What's the optimal amount? What's the recommended minimum?
And drivers are now updated, thank you for the prompt (I'm bad like that).
Rendering 2-3 hours with an RTX 2060... Way too long... If the scene fits in your VRAM, it should render normal scenes in less than an hour. 2-3 hours means it is rendering on CPU which is about 20+ times slower.
The thumb rule about Iray is one should have RAM three times more than VRAM. In your case you have 6GB's of VRAM, which isn't much for Iray but your computer would also run way better if you had 32GB's of RAM (which I consider minimum nowadays)
Didn't find anything obvious as the cause for not being able to connect to the database. You didn't change the path in "CMS Cluster Directory" in Content Directory Manager?
Did any updates to Windows and/or the antivirus program happen at same time when you were making changes to DS?
There is a database log as well, it's located in "C.\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Daz 3D\cms\ContentCluster\dblog.txt"
When DS and DAZ Central is not running, open that logfile, delete everything in there and save when asked. Open DS and the dblog.txt should tell what's wrong.
2-3 hours is the max for a complex scene with multiple lights and something like UltraScenery. Simpler renders take much shorter. But I'll look into more RAM, thank you.
No, I didn't change anything, and there were no updates as far as I can tell. I have a vague notion that checking the download paths in DC might have caused that, but no clear indication why it would do it.
Well... After I cleaned the log (I probably should have saved what was there before I deleted it) it remained empty. The database error still pops up on the startup of the DS, but the log is empty.
The log file contains the following lines:

Now, here's a question. With all the issues piling up (and the initial matter of the 101 poses still unresolved), would it make more sense to wipe the slate clean and reinstall everything? (it might take more of my time, but it should save yours)
And a bonus question: is there a clear list of the steps to take in the right order for the error-free instal and of everything (folders etc.) that needs to be purged before the reinstal?
There is this guide;
https://helpdaz.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/207812393-PostgreSQL-Connection-Error-and-No-Smart-Content
Reinstallation may or may not work, as DS keeps a lot of stuff stored in the registry, which isn't cleared when one does the uninstall
Thank you! Everything seems to be fine now, and I hugely appreciate your time and your help. And I'm saving this link, because it seems that in my case, "reinstal DAZ" has magical properties of fixing issues ;).
Thanks again, and I'm off to check whether I still have that spare RAM packed somewhere.
For all those who might experience similar issues, this is what I did in the final steps:
Using the link that PerttiA provided, I went all the way through the "reinstall DAZ steps" (just reinstalling PostgreSQL didn't work for me), and that cleared the Postgre warning. Then I uninstalled the 101 Expressions before I did the "reimport database" step. After that, I installed them again, and everything seems to be working as intended now.
