Loading a backdrop/background image

Brand new DS user here, just by a few days. I've done a little searching of the forum and come up with a blank on this....

How do I import or load a background image, say or photo or bryce image. When I load up the backgrounds in DS they change the lighting.

    Use the Environment pane and select Backdrop. Then select the image you want to use. You are probably loading the image in the Environment section of the Render Settings pane, which is not what you want.

    It works! But then I tried to change the background and the Environment pane went away. Think I accidently hid it and can't figure how to get it back. Total DS newb here....

    Note that to avoid too much rendering delay (at least with IRay Preview) it's preferable to crop or resize the picture so it matches the size of the Viewport.  Large pictures can cause a considerable delay, before rendering starts.
