Recovering data from a corrupted external HDD (Solved)

A friend of mine has a corrupted external Hard Drive. I know recovery programs exist, but I don't know how to advise him on this.
Could anyone recommend a recovery program that's free, or cheap, please? (I have a feeling that he is going to prefer the "free" option).

If he is on a Mac, Disk Utility works. Not sure of the embedded Windows version, but there is one in Utilities I believe.
The question would probably be what kind of corruption? Theya re not tools i have ever used, but I think many of the good ones will have a free version that will at least preview what they say they can recover - you have to pay to actually do the recovery.
I couldn't get anything to work for my corrupted Macbook Pro drive except taking it to a professional and it cost like 300 bucks on top of the cost of a new hard drive.
If the drive failed mechanically, rather than being corrupted, it may be possible to order a replacement part for it for a small fraction of the price of performing data recovery.
EDIT: It's linked to a Windows machine.
Gee... Thanks for the help. I redirected my friend to the EaseUS site. I don't know if it's worked. He hasn't told me if it's worked. I'll just have to assume that it has.
_ all in all an interesting subject _
