Iray Render Times: Same Scene, Different times

I'm converting some old connected scenes to IRAY to see how they look.

I converted one's shaders and lights and set it to render...I stopped it at an hour's time..progress bar was around 50%..so was convergence.

File looks great though.

Using Pose and Camera and shape presets, I turned THIS IRAY Converted file into the next scene in the set.

[the light sources in the picture is 8 pinlights for votive candles set at 1500 lumens (the default). one colored spotlight shining down providing the main room light @65000 Lumens and a sphere gemoetry, and the backdrop "video wall" (20 lumen)]

The only changes between this scene and that are the pose/postions of 2 characters and 2 props, some slight shaping change to a surface (cushion morphs), the camera being repositioned, but otherwise the same.

Also, and this may or may not be the important difference, the backdrop being scaled up about 10% percentage points (it fills the background on the original, the camera reposition needed it a bit bigger to cover the whole area and not leave blank spaces.). Same with the floor...scaled a few points to cover blank spaces.

RUNNING this version (saved to a new file), the render finished on it's own after 22 minutes. (using the iray default settings).

Can the camera reposition, or the slight change of the backdrop mesh, really effect render time THAT much (hour hitting 50%, to finished (95% convergence) in 22 minutes?)

(ALSO: in the first picture all 8 pinlights are in view of the camera. In the second, only 1 is)

Edit: the 3rd picture (same situation as above) hit 86.75% convergence in 15%..I killed it there)

Their not board appropriate to post, and are unneeded for the question. This isn't a specific work question but a general question.
