Iray limits seem unreliable

I was working on a scene yesterday. I set it rendering and when I came back to check it looked good, it had been rendering for about 3 and a half hours and convergence was about 98% so I stopped it and saved it. Later on I moved a few things around, and changed the aspect ratio. I didn't change any other render settings. I set it running before I went to bed hoping to find a good render in the morning but next morning the picture was a bit grainy and when I checked the log it said it had stopped just after 2 and a half hours due to the time limit and the convergence was about 28%. Since I didn't change any of the limit settings why was the first render still going an hour longer than the second one was stopped for running out of time? Has anyone else seen this happen?

Maybe your renderer dropped to CPU on the second render.

Or maybe the changes you made, changed the lighting in the scene significantly.

It didn't drop to CPU. the log said it was rendering on the grpahics card.

Moving things around might have made the convergence lower but I expected it to carry on rendering at least as long as the first one did. What I don't understand is why the second render was stopped automatically just after two and a half hours while the first one carried on an hour past that time, and only stopped because I cancelled the render.

Did you set your own time limit and samples as new default values?

I have noticed that occasionally DS has changed the values to the original default unless I have set mine as default ones. The DS default time limit is around 2 hours if I remember correctly.
I use 15000 for both the time limit and max number of samples.

I didn't know you could change the defualt values. I did change the time limit some time ago but I haven't touch it for a long time.

Every dial has a cogwheel icon, where one can access the settings for that dial. One can set the default value as well as minimum and maximum values, the changes made this way are saved in that scene only.

I have a scene subset that has nothing but, my lights, my cameras, my rendering settings and the "SPY MeasurementWall". When I'm working on a scene, I just merge that scene subset into the new scene and Bob's my uncle.

Thank you, that's very useful information. I'll have a go at that.

BTW is the SPY MeasurementWall that prop in sharecg for figures to stand against for mugshots like in a police drama? That's the best match I could find for it on Google.

It used to be on ShareCG, now it's on DA by the name of "MWall 2.0 for Daz Studio" by SpyroRue
