Identify a gpu bottleneck in iray

Hi

I'm about to upgrade my GPU to a RTX 3070 and I'm aware of the bottleneck (in games). My CPU is a i7 4790 (3.60ghz).

1. Im not sure how to identify this bottleneck while rendering and I don't know if it happens so intense in 3d as I see in games.
2. I don't know if I should choose both (gpu and cpu), without cpu the render is so slow. (Currently using a gtx 980)

thanks

If I may ask, why the 3070, in case you haven't bought it already. It has just 8GB's of VRAM and while at the moment it's not too limiting, the situation may change quite fast.

My previous GPU was 2070 Super (8GB's) which I bought 2 years ago, and while the 8GB's was enough then, with the developments in DS, Iray itself and the trend where products have become VRAM hogs, it started limiting my work already and changed it to a 12GB 3060 earlier this year. Didn't get much more speed, but when the card renders my usual scenes in about or under 15 minutes, that's fast enough, considering the next 12GB card would've been 3080 with a much higher price tag.

yes, the bottleneck is VRAM, so the recommendation is at least 12GB, better 24GB, other things are not so critical since you can adjust render settings to let the render time less than 3 minutes and still got good quality (under my 1080ti).

No need to choose both, just choose GPU is enough, as long as the used VRAM is not exceeding.

if you don't have a 12g card... this is good logic. you gain some cudas with the 3070 but what good are the cudas if you have to fall to cpu.
Still using a titanX 12 card. I have to jump to the 3080s just have the same vram and to gain cudas.
so I may just bide the time until I can get the 24g card...

but tghe chart below from nvidia shows the basic stats for cards and price ranges in the US on todays date.
