Renders finish too fast, leaving image grainy?
So I have an odd issue that my renders for some reason wants to finish really fast, leaving the render incomplete and grainy. I've tried different resolutions and adding more lights, but nothing seems to fix it or make em load longer. I've tried both leaving render settings at default, but also upping max samples etc. Also even if I enable Post Denoiser it uses roughly the same render time, while if I remember correctly, it should be MUCH faster due to the denoising effect it applies?
- video showing both types of settings I've tried, with different resolutions (golden portrait ratio + full hd)
- video with more lighting
It's a bit hard to see the graininess in the videos, but here's the "finished" render -

Under render settings goto Progressive Render settings. If you turn off Render Quality Enable. You can set Max Samples the higher the number the longer the render processes (Ive never done one larger than 10000 usually the 5000 is plenty and probably lower would be too you just have to decide where you want the quality to be. Max Time is set to secs so if your doing a high quality render that takes a lot of time you might have to change that it cuts off at 2 hours.
FYI if you use the Max Samples/Max Times it will run til whichever number is meet first or you stop the render. I usually set the Samples high and then when it reaches a point I am happy I stop it.
If you want to use Render Quality my go to settings was Rendering Quality anywere from 3-5 and Rendering Converged Ratio 99% -Dont set to 100 theres I reason but I cant remember what it is.
I don't know all the technical stuff behind these settings so im sure someone can help with that.
What do you have in your Progressive Rendering settings?
I've also tried just simply leaving all settings on default, no change in render time. It gets to about 804 iterations really fast and then it's done.
Huh, interesting. I tried disabling Rendering Quality, and it now seems to be rendering properly. I have no idea why that is, as I've always had that enabled without issues. Here's a before and after :)
Set "Rendering Quality Enable" to "Off" and it will only follow the "Max Samples" and "Max Time" settings - Still allowing you to stop rendering anytime you think the image is good enough.
The "Update Interval" at 5 seconds in in my opinion unnecessarily often, it takes some resources from the computer to update, so I prefer using 30 seconds for that interval.
But why does "Rendering Quality Enable" make it stop long before it's clearly done? Does the software think it looks good enough?
