Slaying the Dragon Bundle - Is It Right?

I was recently considering how to demonstrate DS to someone, and looked at the Slaying the Dragon free bundle. The ready-to-render scene did not produce very satisfying results. The slayer character was almost invisible in the shadows, and the rather nice background image was also almost black. The bundle's promo picture uses a different camera and aspect ratio, but seems to have more visibility for these elements, at least.

Is the result I got really what was intended?

For fun, I rendered a second time, with gamma correction on (value 2.2). The result is certainly less overshadowed, but not necessarily an improvement.

The settings for that bundle were for 3delight rather than Iray -- if you change the Render Engine to 3delight it will look the way it was intended.

    Those were 3delight renders.

So, no idea? Should I file this as a bug report? I am not sure what the tutorial image is supposed to look like, so that doesn't seem quite appropriate.
