Why? What are you trying to achieve? Are you hoping to use it as a backdrop? Which program are you using?
Luxrender, by default, will display the HDR used for lighting as a backdrop...
it's a .hdr being used as a light source....what else could it be used for?...and I'm not trying to crack wise as it's an honest question....I was told by the fellow who gave it to me to load it in the diffuse channel in daz studio and then aim the light where I want it through the use of the sphere....I would then load the hdr into Reality .
Ok...that's what I was after...
Yes, loading it into a Reality light won't let you aim it, because it won't be visible, until you render.
What version of Studio...
Because you should be able to load the sphere, go to the Surfaces tab/pane and in the Diffuse color, click on the down arrow in the box on the left side and Select Browse to browse to the location of the file. Studio should (at least the builds since 4.6) 'see' the hdr (or exr) file extension as a valid image format...(the actual build for direct hdr/exr support was earlier than 4.6, but I'm not sure how much earlier).
this is the type of hdr I'm trying to use

in the past I've used HDR's from I think HDRMap,com that came with jpg's that loaded into the sphere and.exr's that loaded into Reality....and that worked.
I was told by someone who made an example of this type of IBL for me that it should load by the way you just described which is what I've been trying.
I'm using Daz 4.8 and Reality 2.5
I use zbyg's HDRs all the time...as hdr files, in both lights and surfaces.
When you do browse to the file, does the file not show up as one you can add? Or does it not show on the surface of the sphere?
"When you do browse to the file, does the file not show up as one you can add?"
yes that's right and the file filter is set to "Image Files" as well...jpg is the only format that shows up which is why I initially made the mistake of loading a jpg into the sphere thinking that this light set was similar to the HDRMap.com ones
mjc1016 you say you've used these studio IBL's ...so you are able to load a hdr directly into the sphere and are able to actually identify the light
within the sphere?thanx for the help btw
If jpg is the only one that shows up, something is broken in your install, because you should also see tif, png, tga and a couple of others, in addition to hdr and exr.
think this has been answered in the Reality forum in a thread I've started on this subject....this light set is designed to work with Reality 4 and apparently simply won't work in Reality 2.5...bummer
edit correction... the light will work in Reality 2.5 however there's apparently no way of loading a preview into the sphere .
I've copied and pasted this from the thread over at the Reality forum cause I thought it might be of interest to others who are still using Reality 2.5 and are looking to use this type of IBL
"If you can hold on a day or 2 I am in the process of making quite a large collection of IBL lights consisting of Round/Rect/Hex shapes each in 3 sizes plus different angles (horizon to directly above). The round set is made so far & when the other are complete I am planning on making it like a runtime so you can click on the icon for the light you want in the Studio content manager & it will load the light plus sphere etc. There will also be jpg versions which will load in the IBL sphere of Reality avoiding the 2.5 issue of not showing."
