The hair will show up properly when you render the scene. You are seeing only the strand based hair guidelines in the Tetxture-Shaded viewport. This is normal. Nothing is wrong. When you render, be sure you do not have a mesh editing tool like the Geometry Editor or Mesh Grabber selected. Those tools interfere with proper rendering of this type of hair.

Ah I see now! You were right, I had the Geometry editor tool selected...switching to the Translate tool let me view the hair while posing. Thank you for letting me know!
