You thoughts on Genesis 3 characters to be remade in Genesis 8.1

Hi, I have a lot of my OC's I've created from the old V4 days (even v3) that I've upgraded to Genesis 2 Female, then Genesis 3 Female. Each time it was really (mostly) remaking my characters to match the previous version as close as possible, head to toe.

Well, though I have Genesis 8 and 8.1, I only recently started to play around with them and I admit some of the results fro head shots is wonderful.  Doesn't look like they have as many morphs available as Genesis 3, however It does look good.

Can you modify the base figures (morphs) in hexagon like you can G3F?  Do you know, if I start all this with G3's to G8's, is DAZ looking for yet another Genesis version?

Ultimately, I am looking to see if it is worth it to actually update my characters to Genesis 8.1.

Anyway, here ae a couple pics I have: one of my original character Adrea in Genesis 3 Female. The other a fairly quick attempt at her face in Genesis 8.1 female (using the Dallas textures).

  • My thoughts:

New is not always "better" ... I have not been updating all morphs to have the same sets of morphs for every figure ever made. If I want to use a G2F morph, then I'll use G2F. If I want to use a G8.1M morph then I'll use G8.1M.

Technically, yes it's possible to morph the G8 and G8.1 figures in Hexagon -- AFAIK, same as one might consider for any other generation. The mesh is different in places. I always recommend using the bridge to Hexagon, and go very easy or even avoid surface seam areas. One can help Hexagon by removing any fancy shaders from the figures first. If bringing in 2 figures, freeze the one being used as reference and delete it when finished using it as a reference.
Also, remember to have the figures at base resolution and NO eyelashes NO tears [G8.1].

The customers normally do not know what or when Daz3D is planning to do a lot of stuff, unless they release word. We know that they are working on a Daz Studio 5.x. I think most of us expect a Genesis 9 to come along with it. When, nobody that knows can say, so we don't know.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I may wait to see what the future brings. I use G8 sparingly currently, and hesitate investing too much in it.

There isn't a need to remake them.

The textures transfer, just use them in the shader you prefer.

The shapes can be transferred via a couple of products in store. Don't buy one new character, buy a transfer system and get them all. It should be noted that occasionally transfer don't work, I believe, but I've not had any issues.

Thanks so much for this suggestion. I'll seriously look at that.

The DAZ products required to transfer the shapes over to 8.0/8.1 would either be:

XTransfer by Zev0 (single product solution) or Character Converter G3M to G8M and Character Converter G3F to G8F by Riversoft Art.

Keep in mind that neither product can convert G3 HD morphs over to G8. This is a limitation imposed by Studio, not the fault of the individual products themselves. So if you're looking to convert, for example, Lydia HD for Victoria 7 over to G8/G8.1, the basic head/body morphs will transfer over, but the secondary HD detail morphs will not.

Also, remember that while generic G3 characters do share UVs with G8, G3 Core Figures (Michael 7, Victoria 7, Ivan 7, Lee 7, et al) do not. They have their own custom UV sets and in order to use their textures properly on G8/8.1 you will require these products: Genesis 3 Character UVs for Genesis 8 Female and Genesis 3 Character UVs for Genesis 8 Male by RedzStudio.

I prefer BlackSmith Pro / Texture Transformer for transfering textures from previous generations. Those that are the default for the specific generaltion as described above can be re-mapped using Studio.

Under surfaces, Map Transfer can be found; simply match the different surfaces Head, lips, arms, whereever to the appropriate groupings (Default Templates).

  • Thanks everyone. These suggestions and thoughts are helpful.  I'll definitely give them thought!
