Question about a new computer

Will, I am so very happy that I finally got my funding for a new desktop.  I should have it in a few weeks.  But I am just thinking about Daz and all of my files. I know I have to install Daz Studio on my new system, but do I have to re-download all my files?  or does anyone know of an easier way for me to transfer all my file from one pc to another.  I looked at a few tutorials on-line, and they drive me nuts talking about a ton of usless information before telling me something I already know.  Just wanted to see if anyone else has been through this process and if anyone knows of some other ways to share my files from my old pc.

Thanks

  • How do you install your content?

Get disc imaging software like Macrium, image your "My DAZ 3D Library" and then install it to your new machine. Install DAZ Studio and point it to the Library. Plus you'll have

a forever back up of your library on that date. It'll take a while.

Only if you manually install though (I do).

Thanks for the tip @movida yes  I manually install as well:  only use DIM when some files don't have a manual download option (usually some components of plug-ins).

Was able to re-install most of my library from the old HDD but it was still a PITA.  Macrium sounds like a good investment yes

If one uses manual installation, moving and/or copying the content library from one drive to another or to an other computer is as easy as moving and/or copying whatever files in windows. Afterwards one just needs to tell DS, where the content library is located.

Manual installation does not preclude the use of metadata and the Content Management System.

I don't think I was saying it did.

I use manual installation only and the metadata dependent functions work just fine.

If one uses the Installers, moving stuff around or copying to another computer becomes more complicated as the installers keep track of what has been installed and where and that information should also be copied and/or changed to make the installers see what has been done.

  • My point was that if there is any custom data (user's own files or recategroisations of content for which metadata was imported) then that neds to be exported before trasnferring the content to the new system. Subject to that it is a simple copy and paste job, but without it may have undesirable outcomes.

I always put my manual installs to /my documents/daz3d/my library. Which is backed up. Once every once in while. I'll delete scenes and renders. Since they have been backed up also. Once a month I'll create an image of my Windows drive. Only after taking it offline, using boot disk.

Another time saver - put your "My DAZ 3d Library" on a nice, 8 TB external drive - then you only have to plug it into your new computer - but back it up too :)

Did I not mention that I have an 8 TB drive for my games? I also have a 16TB external drive plugged into my printer for backups. My windows drive a 4TB Nvme connected to a PCIe bus; the only thing on it is Windows and DAZ. All other programs go to the 8TB or !6TB. I haven't got a big enough Library to worry about it yet. SSD are starting to come out with up to 16TB or more.
