Fatal error and reset - macOS on M1 Max

Hi Everyone!

I've been using Daz Studio on my Mac Studio with M1 Max chip with no worries until yesterday.
The render process uses my CPU, I set all the 10 CPUs to work on rendering process. Everything went Ok... yesterday I've installed new assets in my Daz Studio, a new character and a new hair. The hair is a d-force hair called dforce Blowout hair.

In two moments that I was rendered using my new assets, after a time rendering, my screen turn to the pink color and my machine just reset.
I don't know if te asset is too heavy, or if it's a problem in Rosetta 2. The fact is, my machine crashes only when rendering with that asset. I'm also not sure the proble is with Daz Studio, but the two time it happened, I was rendering with the new assets.I would like to know if there is a place where I can take Da Studio log to analyse if Daz was the cause of the roblem, or even Rosetta 2.

After this episode, I've entered into my mac diagnostic mode... no issues were found in my hardware, so I convenced it's a software issue.

Now I'm working all day long, not using Daz Studio of course, and the problem doesn't happen yet.

Anyway, has anyone else gone through this kind of situation?

  • Hi,

I was investigating more about this issue, and the problem wasn't with Daz Studio... it was a coincidence!
In the day I've bought and use the new assets, I also connected an old Western Digital external HD in a USB-C hub.
I just put my scene to the rendering process, and after some time, my Mac Studio entered in sleep mode.
Every time I waked my computer up, a kernel panic occurs... I thought it was because Rosetta 2 and to have very heavy textures and geometries being processing... but not, Rosetta 2 is innocent!

So, I did a quick research, and I've discovered that Apple Sillicon chips (M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra), all of them have an issue (shame issue by the way) during the awake process if you machine has some external devices connected in thunderbolt or USB-C ports, like hubs and external drives.
Western Digital drivers in special are in the blacklist!

Now, I'm 2 days without any device connected in my computer, and no kernel panic so far. The next step is to connect each device that I have, and watch for the strange behaviours.

For all people with that issue, I recommend disconnect any external device, or enable the option related to don't allow the Mac sleep when the monitor screen turns off.
