OOT Hair textures always look washed out

Seems like all of them I own. If you choose a dark color, looks more white. I've attacfhed an image of the Rose hair, which I use quite often.

Seems to be mostly due to the topcoat, but even adjusting that I struggle to get something good.

Anyone else find this an issue?

  • Reduce all glossiness and/or change base color and glossy color to a shade of gray.

Anyway, OOT hairs have very clean UV unwraps and take alternate hair shaders very well. You can change materials to anything else.

I had the same issue with one hair style not looking right in a scene I was doing.. I had two identical figures with the exact same hair style, one looked good the other look terrible. Doing a test now I noticed the hair rendered alright, so has me thinking that a lot of the problems were lighting based.

I've tried alternate hair shaiders (like FSL and Sveva), but they seem to require even more fiddling.

Turning Translucent weight all the way off helps a lot, along with chnaging topcoat color to a mid shade of gray.

Some hair models from various PAs require you to FIRST click on a BASE for the hair, BEFORE you add the colour or effects.  Check if the hair you are getting the unpleasant results with requires you to first apply a base, which is in probably the first folder for the hair, before the folders for colours etc.

Also, check if the render engine you are rendering with is set to the same thing as the texure of the hair - like, Iray hair textures with Iray render engine --- 3Delight hair texture with 3Delight render engine.  AND that the lighting you are using matches the hair and render engine.  Don't try to render Iray textured hair with 3Delight.

...indeed the attached uses OOT's Rochelle Ponytail Hair which took very well to using Slosh's UHT 2 Ultimate Colour .(used the "Stark White" colour setting adjusted with the Lightness and Translucency utilities to create true albino hair).

I never use 3Delight. And anything that isn't Iray gets converted. But the hairs in question are all Iray. It's really only OOT hairs that I have a problem with if I'm using  darer colors.

Wow, ok. The forum wasn't responding in any way when I tried to post a comment, but took every click without any feedback that anything was happening.

...was wondering about all the responses when  I looked on the contents page. Yeah the forum software here is real flaky (just had another 504 bad gateway error a few moments ago).

If it doesn't seem like a comment is posting, best to wait, otherwise once clicking several times will end up with multiple repeated posts queued up waiting for when the software and servers figure out what is happening and do what they are supposed to do. Also, I usually compose my comments in Word (much better spell checking as well) and then paste them in so if there is a glitch or gateway issue, nothing gets lost.

I had that problem the other day and there doesn't seem to be an option to delete a post either. Though maybe I just couldn't find it...

No there isn't, I looked. You can only edit it. Not very good software.

I think it was Richard Haseltine who told me that you can always flag a comment (click on the little flag under your avatar) and enter sth. like  "Double post, please delete." Then this comment will be soon deleted by the forum mods.

  • Dupe posts dealt with, but yes - if posting don't refresh or click mutliple times as it will take each as a command to add another reply.
