Is there anyone out there who has children who work with DAZ3D?  If so, what would you say is a good age to start?  What type of subject matter do they create?

Thanks.

  • Hmmm ... DazStudio does make some effort to be more family friendly (good for them) ... there are things they prohibit from the store and gallery. However, there are still a lot of mature themes that do come across in the products (yes, I know, what is considered mature varies widely across the globe and in different nationalities) ... but I, personally, would be very cautious letting a child use it. While my family does see my finished renders, they have no idea what goes on behind the scenes setting things up ... or what I see while browsing the store. A child does not have the full capabilities to discern the ramifications of some of the themes sold here.

Would children be capable of using the program? that is a different question and yes, I think they could learn it and use it. Being a render artist is not nearly so difficult as learning the full spectrum of modeling, texturing, rigging, and animation.

Letting a child use DAZ|Studio does not mean that they would access the store or gallery too. Install it on a standalone computer for them or firewall the DAZ site off from their computer, curate the content installed for them to use, and if they are looking for new content don't just give them your credit card but instead browse the store together with them. The primary images for the products are good enough that you can already judge from them alone whether the product behind it would be inappropriate for their use without opening the actual product page (And I mean inappropriate here. Whether the product is useful or useable os a completley different question).

  • I remember watching a video in class one day wherein the illustrator of a children's book on Monsters did very well in sales. And children drew pictures of their monsters and mailed them to him. They were scarier than anything he could imagine! So only you know you child and what direction you would have them develop their imaginations.

As to browsing the store, not unsupervised would be my 2 cents. Mind you, I don't think the internet itself is a safe place for children either. I know that there are children that browse even through the forums. I think the youngest one I've encountered in here was about 10 years old.

    Anatomical elements won't harm a child's development.
In case, you would like to avoid answering a kid's question, you will most likely get as much questions on those anatomical elements if they are applied to a figure, as as much in case they are missing.

I don't see any problems. If children are interested, they should be able to play with DS.

Just purchasing content, should be an adult matter. Not for the kind of content, but as a general rule.
Best would be together with the kid.

IN THE END make sure, real life hobbies and physical activities are not left behind.

    Have fun

  • .... and financial! I'd hate to get the CC maxed out by a 2 year old lol ...

  • my kids used fisher price little people and then playmobil ...  I think daz would be too slow for active young minds...they want to grab a "person" in each hand and make them talk and do thinks...
A private moment of gloating ... was after my Daughter got the grand the playmobil victorian town house  and I have given her a castle was when the grand said "but Mom all you can do with a house is play house with a castle you can have adventures.

but a quick program with lots of great stuff was Kid Pix which was used in a lot of schools.. and is currently available as a web app. and it looks like there is a 3d version out at $49 if you google for it.

it would be tough call on when to let a kid use it.. how often do you get bored waiting for something to happen in daz
    ---
a couple pictures of a kid with a real 3d world.
And yes I played with the 1950s version of kids toys which is probably why I play with daz?
