Just wondering how this image was created.  Is there a model?  How are the glowing eyes created? Thanks.

With a light shining at them.

  • the eyes could be an emmisve material.
This dude is pretty good ... even moreso in a low light setting.

  • The eyes in the first picture look closer together than what's on that model.

just use the X scale to narrow the braincase... If you're lucky the old dude won't notice and leave you alone .... tin foil helmet recommended,

    @tacrec PerttiA's correct, that's Cthuloid for G8Male.

That was an image I made for a New User Challenge, I imagine that's how you found it... (and I highly recommend participating in those if you're at all new to DS, I learned a ton only participating in a handful of 'em).

I know the eyes were themselves Emissive, just go to the Surfaces tab and find the Eyes, look for the Emission Parameter which is probably set to 0,0,0 (Black). Click in the color bar, set the color to your liking and that will turn on Emission for that surface. Then look for the Luminescence or Lumens parameter right under Emission to set how brightly lit the eyes are.

If I remember correctly (and if it were to make a difference), I believe I had the Eyes posed to be closed so that they looked like glowing membranes or something rather than stark red spheres.

I was at the beginning of my learning in this amazing software, hopefully you can do something even cooler with Cthuloid. I'd love to see any Lovecraft related artwork that I can!

Also, the Cthulhu Rising figure that alan bard newcomer mentioned is an awesome toy to play with as well. It only has 3Delight textures, but you can definitely create dark shadowey images and or texture it with a stone/marble look to make your own Cthulhu Statue at a minimum.

    Fun stuff, best of luck!!

With the bleedover around it lit looks more illuminated than emissive to me.

only 3dl textures.. but how much difference is there between 3dl and iray textures? as opposed to materials.
two of the old boys.. one in his 3dl texture and other with the uber iray shader applied to the textures.
Which twin has the iray? Hint it's the one facing the middle.

  • Hehee, nice. That's the reason I mentioned it, though. Adding the Uber Base doesn't change the way it looks unless you go through and rework everything yourself using the parameters that it adds (and possibly update the actual texture images themselves in some way), which I thought a newer user might want to know before making a purchase...

Again, though, I love Cthulhu Rising and have used it quite a bit (much more than the Cthuloid figure) in a number of ways. It's possibly my favorite figure for DS. :D

  • Couldn't help myself, loaded Mr. Cthulhu Rising to try making the eyes emissive to show what it might look like. Played around just a bit with adding the Uber Base and translucency to the skin... Can't close his eyes so it took a bit of playing around with placement of ghost lights inside the eyeballs... could be very cool with a little more time spent toying with it and setting up an actual scene.

Probably won't read unless full screen. Even playing around with the skin to try and improve it, my instinct is always to go dark as h...

  • related material ... perhaps.
thirty years ago I did the book production work for a small press that published non-fiction pertaining to the sf, fantasy, mystery, and horror fields.
In I989 a young artist named Bruce Timm produced a few pictures for use by the press particularly with Cthulhu related titles.
here's an album of the them... they were black and white and I colorized them in photoshop  for the covers.
Adding a better image of the old dude as the one in the album is washed out.
Bruce Timm is certainly more well known as the co-creater of a character named Harley Quinn found in DC Comics.

  • Woah!! That is amazing!!!

I admittedly didn't know him by name, but looking him up it is crazy to see the amount of cool stuff he's done throughout his career. What an awesome bit of history those book covers are. Thanks for sharing that! :D

I was involved in specialty press publishing starting in 1987 using a mac plus to layout books.. until a fire in 1999 pretty much wiped out my company...
If Daz had been around at the level it is now back then what a great thing that would have been.
Cover done  2012 or so for an ebook...
interesting I opened the original duf file and everything about the characters bodies (M4 and V4.2) were auto-adapted and so not found.
I wonder if I still have all those old autoadpted things somewhere.
First image is the adapted cover for the ebook on amazon
second image was the one I gave the author to create that image
third image is just opened result.
    ---
I'm guessing the fact that the bodies were all autoadapted was how things worked back then.
Don't think I've tried to open any scenes that predate genesis... (don't think they're very many.

That is Cthuloid by RawArt in the illustration you posted.

    https://www.daz3d.com/cthuloid-for-genesis-8-male

If you add an emmissive shader to the eyes of the Cthuloid figure, or for instance, use the glowing eye materials that come with the Dark Guard figure and apply them to Cthuloid, and then turn on bloom, you should get a really cool effect.

Not sure how the original was done, but this is how I would do it with Iray.

Here is a quick render I did ...
