slicing off the back portion of a model for render

I know I'm going to come across as a total noob.  I typically have done all my 3D work in after effects using Video Copilot's Element 3D.  I found a model from the Daz shop that I want to use in a film- an elder god (picture below for reference).  I would essentially like to render only a portion of it as though it were coming through a rift in the sky, so only a tentacle at first, followed by more in another scene, followed by several and maybe the mouth, etc.  How would I go about occluding parts of the model so I can composite it more easily in after effects with other elements that I'm adding?

I hope that all makes sense.  :/

  • There are a couple of obvious approaches.

The simplest, in DS, is to render normally and save as PNG or Tiff - then you can use whatever tools you normally use for such effects in After Effects.

However, you can do this kind of think in Iray in Daz Studio - if you create geometry (e.g. Create>New Primtive) to obscure the parts you want hidden you can then apply the Create Advanced Iray Node Properties script to the geometry and turn on Iray Matte in the Parameters pane to make the geometry mask things out.

  • That makes sense- thanks!
