Are there any crowd scripts that don't cost a bunch of bucks (seriously - I saw one for hundreds of dollars)?

    A Billboard is like a render of a character placed on a plane primitive. You can have numerous Billboards in your scene as they take up much less vram in your Nvidia GPU.

    As @dawnblade stated, a billboard is like a render placed on a primitive plane.  Do a YouTube search for daz studio billboards and you will see a list of several videos about billboards and even about how to make your own billboards. I have watched just about all of them (WP Guru, RenderGuide, Dreamlight3D, Parmy Baddahan, and others) and you should certainly watch the two videos by RiverSoft Art who created the Now-Crowd Billboards line in the Daz store.  His video Now-Crowd Billboards for Daz Studio Tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwcAFT85iAM) gives you a general overview of working with his line of Now-Crowd Billboards and his video Now Crowd Utilities for Daz Studio (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmifvaH88Ok) discusses how to use his Now-Crowd Utilities product.  The Now-Crowd Utilities requires that you have at least one of his Now-Crowd Billboards products.  The Utilities allows you to create new billboards using the individual billboard assets in the Now-Crowd Billboards products that you own.  You can create your own crowds.

    Each of the three Now-Crowd Billboard products that I have came with a document by RiverSoft Art  covering the general use of Now-Crowd Billboards.  Of course, you’d need to buy the product first.  In doing a general web browser search though, I discovered that the document is available via the Read Me page for some of Now-Crowd Billboards. To save you the effort of trying to find it, I’ve attached the document.

    one thing I've always wished (and it's probably has cost daz some sales over the years) if there's a pdf for the product make it available, before I spend money I want to know all I can about a product and plugins and utiilites are the kind of things that a sales blurb really doesn't cover in depth.

    There is a somewhat NSFW, free product called Destroy! which contains crowd assets: https://sites.google.com/view/destroyfordaz/CrowdsGuide (I linked to the crowds page directly because there is nothing NSFW there, the main page features a naked giantess).

    The entire thing is meant to be used for creating giants (think King Kong, but naked women instead) and the destruction they would cause, including panicing crowds. Make of that what you will, but it does contain a free crowd asset.
