Different between SubD modifier vs. High Res mesh at rendertime

In Cycles, is there a difference at render time between trying to render a Low Poly mesh with a subD modifier vs a High Poly mesh (created by applying the subD modifier)?

I don't think there's any relevant difference. I mean subd is useful for animation and modeling, but when it comes to render times doesn't make any difference.
p.s. Usually the render time is much higher than the time needed to subdivide the scene. But if it's not the case, then using a "baked subdivision" may speed up the rendering.
