Garibaldi Hair & Iray

Anyone have any luck using the Garibaldi hair system within an iRay render, or any ideas how to make it work.  Works fine in 3D but nothing in iRay appears - am guessing it's a shader issue.

You need to export to OBJ - Iray does not use RiSpec curves, which is how Garibaldi Express (and Look at My Hair) generate the hair.

It's doable, but the resources required once the obj has been imported are impressive!

I actually returned the product; if they make it work in IRAY, I'll probably re-purchase as it was very impressive.

Not sure about Garibaldi, which I think is easier to use, but Look At My Hair is supposed to have an update for Iray. The author mentioned as much, but of course no ETA was given. With the approval process at Daz being variable, I doubt he could give one anyways.

I've found that sometimes, the obj exported hair can actually have less of an impact on an Iray render than some of the high res textured transmapped hairs.

    Really, ah well.

Although part of my problem was the gfx card cries like a baby with the hair as an object, which was an additional issue I had.

Great - thanks all.  I will put using it on hold until and iRay update

A large hair, with detailed texture files will take more video RAM than an moderate obj 'strand' hair with just diffuse color, especially if it doesn't need/have any SubD.  Geometry is 'cheaper' than large, high detailed textures....you can easily, hit over 100 MB in textures alone for a single transmapped hair, combine that with SubD and for some of the larger more detailed hairs, you will be using over 200 MB.  A moderate obj hair should come in at less than 100 MB.

That's good to know, appreciate it; guess I'll consider getting it again, although I have other items to buy first, so probably will wait until the fix happens. Who knows physX might get added first. :)
