Installing Rendo G8 Characters into Studio

Never installed Rendo content in Studio before, but I'll be starting off with G8 characters by Sangriart and HID3D. Should I create folders for them the My Daz 3D Library directory... or should I install them in My Library?

I would recommend you put them in My Library; the idea is that My Daz 3D library is for stuff you got from the store and will be updated while My Library is for 3rd party and your own creations.

I create categorized folders for non-Daz store content; copy the unzipped folders into them [I use 7-zip], then I link them to Studio through Content Library tab / right click / Directory Manager [approximate name, can't remember exactly] which brings up a window with a flow chart that allows folders to be navigated to, chosen, assigned, & applied. Daz causes enough confusion with content placement. I don't want to add to it.

But I'm anal retentive. If your mental bent is not towards structure and order, then you might not want to bother with this method.

  • If I install characters in anything other than the My Daz 3D Library, will their shaping dials still show up in Parameters alongside regular DAZ characters?

Yes, as long as you point Daz Studio to the location in Edit > Preferences > Content > Content Directory Manager

  • I am using Content Wizard (https://www.daz3d.com/content-wizard) to install Rendo content. It also gives you the opportunity to create the missing SmartContent metadata, so it will show up (basically) like anything ordered from the Daz store.

  • All my content goes into "My Library". 7Zip makes installs from any content store easy, because you can install from any level of the zipped hirachy.
So it doesn't matter if your content folder is "Content", "My Library", "My DAZ Library" or "All The stuff, that I bought somewhere for DAZ Studio".

You would want to start with creating catagory folders such as characters, props and so on, for various content as after a while cramming all of your content into a couple of folders will one eventually slow things down, and make it more of an issue trying to find something.

For those would rather spend time using than managing assets and directories:

    Do you use Smart Content?

Yes: Content Wizard because it creates Smart Content

No: Content Package Assist for ease of installation and uninstallation

  • I highly recommend Content Wizard. Not only does it create Smart Content but also an installer you can then place in your packages folder to later on quickly install/uninstall via DIM.

Regarding folders I was used to have a dedicated library for Non-DAZ content, then I used a dedicated Subfolder. After setting up my library again I stayed with just one library folder. Makes life a lot easier IMO.

I'm old school. I extract to a folder and then transfer it across to my content folder and then I categorise. I've looked at smart content but I find for me that I like to have the categories set up the way that makes sense to me.

It's not a hard or onerous task takes less than 10 mins if you include categorising.

It's pretty easy to install Rendo materials. It's good that you're giving them a go - Lots of talented folk doing good work over there. I don't recommend doing what I do. If you do it wrong, you can mess stuff up. I unpack the zips, look at the file structure, make desired changes, and paste the results into my library. Then I load the stuff into a scene to see how it looks and make sure it all works.

  • Same process as I use. Regards, Richard.
  • For each store I purchase content I have created a unique directory for that content.

If you have even a moderate amount of products from DAZ itself, trying to find Rendo or Render Hub items in the DAZ Library using the Content Library tab can take forever. Having a dedicated directory makes it much easier.

  • I've decided to manually install to a subdirectory tree under My Library.

My setup in this instance is C.... My Library/Daz Renderosity/Genesis 8 Female

So if I follow PettiA's guidelines, which folder do I point the Content Directory Manager when extracting the zip file -- Daz Renderosity or Genesis 8 Female?

That is a nested library and wont work.

  • Should I point it simply at My Library itself and leave it at that?

You cannot put a library inside another library.

  • I have no idea what you're talking about.

Never mind the subdirectories. Fine. Bad idea on my part. On the other hand, following PerttiA's instructions for manually extracting the zip, can I simply point the files toward My Library and install my character there?

If that "My Library" is what you see under "DAZ Studio Formats" in Content Directory Manager, yes. That is exactly the folder you should extract the files to.

  • Thank you!
