Geografted "fit to" geometry appearing well below figure

Hello --

Sorry for the long post... new to Daz Studio...

I am trying to put a hole in a figure's chest and to do it with geo grafting as I have read about it on many posts. I have imported the figure, set the resolution to base, selected the entire polygon area I will be replacing, then I saved this selection set (and saved the figure with this selection set so I could recall it later) then hidden all the other polygons, then deleted them, then exported the faces to Modo. I have modified the faces using the original geometry (i.e., I did not extrude or add any faces, just pushed the geometry in), then I exported the file (Wavefront .obj).

Once back in Daz Studio, I reloaded the original figure with the selection set (from earlier), set the resolution back to base. Then I imported the .obj file with the modified geometry. I chose Assets -> Transfer Utility and "transfered" the object into the hierarchy (I unchecked Fit to Figure before accepting).

On the original figure, I re-loaded the saved selection set. Then for these selected polygons, I right-clicked and selected Geometry Assignment -> Set Graft Faces for Fitted Figure (chose the imported .obj file). Then, for the same set, I right-clicked and selected the Geometry Assignment -> Set Auto Hide Faces for Fitted Figure.

The I right-clicked on the new geometry node and chose "Fit to..." and selected the original figure. It seemed to "set" fine because it loaded into the viewport, and the figure has a massive hole where the geometry *would* have fit perfectly (I don't know, I haven't gotten any further because of the problem I am about to mention)... BUT the geometry appears *way below* the hole it is supposed to be replacing (i.e., the graft isn't in the right place)...

I have tried this on several genesis 3 models/characters with different geo-grafted areas and I still get the same results: the grafted geometry appears in the viewport, but is "fitted to" a position way below (and oftentimes "off" the character geometry)...

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks!!

It sounds as if your export and import settings didn't match, so the the graft part is being scaled down. If you import it it must line up with the original mesh with no adjustment.

I'm not sure why you want to use a GeoGraft here, unless it's just a test - it sounds as if you are doing something that could be done with a morph. In general for a GeoGraft you are adding new geometry, preserving the vertices that join to the edges of the planned hole in the base fioguire; also, you don't need to cull the geometry in DS, just import the full base resolution figure into modo and delete the parts you don't want at all, then proced to manipulate the areas you do want.

  • Thanks, Richard. It's really weird. I used Daz's Modo settings for both import and export... Are there any of the checkbox options I may not need to check? Or may need to check, you think?

As such, the scale isn't being affected at all. When I bring it into Modo, it lines up perfectly with the full figure (I brough it in in the background just to make sure)... when I export, it is lined up right until I choose "fit to" and then its position (translated on the y) drops to well below where it was (and should be).

I have wrestled with trying to do a morph for days but just gave up in frustration... So, I thought I would go for a geo graft...

This was a simple test at first (just to see if the "pushed" geometry would work. I plan on adding new geometry later on (for example, in a zombie to show internal organs, etc.).

So, it's not a scale problem, but I really do need to figure out how to master this geo graft stuff, I think... If there are any guidelines or advice you can give, I would certainly welcome them!

Thank you so much for your response!!

Make sure there's no scaling on the figure you exported.
