Rhino to Daz Studio – surfaces and nodes

This question might be better in ‘3rd party software’ but there are only specific sections and not one for Rhino

Anyone here use Rhino to make or modify models?

The problem I have, if I have a Rhino model with several different objects (poly mesh) and I export those as obj and import them to Daz Studio, they are all one object so no convenient way to apply different shaders

Is there a setting in Rhino or Daz that I am missing?

  • If you enable the Geometry Editor tool do the parts appear in the Group listing in Tool Settings?

  • When imported it looks like this, see attachment, in Rhino a separate cube and sphere, in Daz, one object

In Rhino you can group, and sub group items, but I don’t know about naming groups

  • well that gave me an idea and some progress, in Rhino when you export as obj there is an option that says ‘use layers for obj group names’

When I do that in the Geometry editor I now see 2 separate Face Groups (cubes & spheres) which were the layer names

There is only one surface though

    Hi Mark,

In Rhino, select an object, then (by default) you should see (right side of screen) a "Properties" tab, select that and choose "Material". There you will see "Assign material by", in the drop down menu, select "object". That will assign the default material to the currently selected object. Just change the material color(basic settings) and a new material will be created for that object.

Repeat that for each object you want a different material. When exporting as "obj" make sure you have the option enable to "Export material definitions"

  • Still not working for me

    Here is the latest experiment:

In Rhino, 4 separate objects, 2 spheres and 2 cubes

Each one has a separate, unique material, applied to the object

The 2 spheres are on a layer named spheres and the cubes are on a layer named cubes

The setting in Rhino for export:

    Export material definitions: On

Export Rhino object names: As Obj object ( but I have explicitly not named any objects )

Export Rhino layer/group names: Layers as OBJ groups

    After importing to Daz Studio:

I have On all the Read…

I have one object, 2 Face Groups, according to the Layers from Rhino

    And one Surface

    Follow on:

I named each object in Rhino, cube 1, cube 2, sphere 1 and sphere 2

Exported and imported with same setting

Still get one object, but now I have 2 surfaces, one for each layer in Rhino (not for each object)

It looks like one can only attach one image at a time so I will make a composite

  • I could attache a Photoshop file that shows each step, Stem_athome, do you have Photoshop?

  • Hi Mark,

Did you rename the materials before export?

By default Rhino naming of materials leaves gaps between wording. DS does not read gaps in material names.

As example. Rhino will name new materials as:-

    New Material 001

    New Material 002

    etc.

DS will read both those materials as being "New"

So if you wanted the names to be similar as default, then rename with underscores in the gaps:-

    New_Material_001

    New_Material_002

    etc

  • Thanks I will look into that, the material name, but still a bigger issue is it imports as one object

  • That did the trick for surfaces, unique names

If separate objects in Rhino imported as separate objects into Daz the surface / materials would not really be an issue

    But these does help

    Thanks

    Hi Mark,

Export/Save from Rhino as FBX (Version 7 Binary).

  • Thanks ! ! !

    that works (FBX)

On minor thing, it imports with 3dlight not iray materials, did I miss a setting?

    DS assigns the material type.

You will have to manually change the material after import.

  • Thanks for all your help

I have a utility I purchased at Daz that is a real time saver, 3dlight to iray converter, so like I said, a minor issue
