Beginning of the End for Daz and 2D Artists?

Here is a YouTube demonstrating AI software where all you do is type in a description of the image you want just using text.

In the notes of the YouTube there will be links to access the software where you are free to try it out. It didn't take me long to figure out how to use the software and the renders were generated in just a few minutes. Attached files are some of the renders I did. Yes, there are limitations and criticisms you can make, but you have to remember this is just the beginning of this type of technology. There is no software to install on your computer nor do you need to purchase various assets. Just type in what you want. I find it fascinating and as a 2D artist, scary. Quite frankly, I like the results considering I only spent 15 minutes before I was able to generate an image while only scratching the surface of its real potential.

Here is the main thread about all this.

It's a big thread, I didn't see any reference to this software.

There are quite a few different ways to generate AI art, including DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion, which can also be installed locally on your own machine. Yes, it is both an amazing and scary development, but I think as long as we use AI art to help us in our own work and not to replace human creativity, replace artists, or win art contests, it can be a positive development.

AI will be the end of 3D-CG-art the same way that 3D-CG was the end of photography, and photography was the end of painting & drawing.

Folks still draw & paint AFAIK.

...AI sounds like a "Make Art" button.

The next step from that will be DNI (direct neural interface) where you jack in to your system and just "think" your art into existence.

I'm amazed at what it can produce though. Using the right keywording is sometimes a challenge. Glad I got a 3090 recently though, really likes a LOT of VRAM.

It looks like a fun thing to play with. Whether it will be the end of anything, well it might change things, I can imagine it would have an effect on professional artists, perhaps not replacing them but being a tool they can use. If it lets them create images with less effort it could be a cost effective way of working and for a professional cost effectiveness is very important. For hobbyists cost effectiveness isn't an issue. A lot of people do hobbies because they enjoy the process of what they are doing and a lot of hobbies have no practical justification. For example I write programs on an old Atari 8 bit computer out of nostalgia. There's no logical reason to do it, using Unity on my Windows PC I can create something with vastly superior graphics and sound and with a lot less effort than writing in 6502 assembler. I expect a lot of hobbyists already using Daz Studio, other 3D applications and paint programs will keep on doing so.

The video talks about a trial period and subscriptions. I suppose that is inevitable. AI needs powerful servers and you would have to pay to use them. I do my best to avoid subscription software so I'll probably stick with applications I can run locally on my PC from vendors who don't make me keep paying for the same sottware over and over again.

It is very cool. However..what about creating scenes..actions between characters and all? Story illustrations. I cant imagine how that could possibly work using AI.

Where does this "AI" get its assets from to build its imagery? Is it stuff they made? Did they buy the assets?  What are the terms of usage for these applications and the imagery it produces? Some of the many questions I'd like to have answered.

In my understanding they trawl the internet for images. Someone in the other thread posted a link to some articles about that: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/7727471/#Comment_7727471

It's very cool, but I don't feel it'll be taking my own creativity any time soon ;). I like to use my brain, not watch some computer use its, as novel as it is at the moment.

  • Clsoing this thread since the other has already done a pretty thorough job of discussing the topic.
