Anyone else feeling like this after G9 reveal?
I'm not hating on G9, I have my complaints (like how details like the nipples are now basically forced to be HD morphs but still not releasing the HD morph importing tool for everyone... greaat... can't see how that's not going to be an issue...)
and I can also see how it will make some things better (nice base mesh, eyes and mouth separate meshes) but... ever since the reveal I don't feel very inclined to spend on Daz stuff anymore. I mean, other than stuff not dependent on characters like environments, tools, etc.
On one hand I don't want to spend on G9 until there are good, working tools for using G8 stuff on it. I've spent a lot of money on G8, not being able to use them reasonably easy on G9 is going to be a deal breaker for me.
On the other hand, even if we eventually get those tools, it's going to be a chore converting eeeverything to G9 so if I'm going to make the jump then I rather not get more G8 stuff I will have to convert and just wait until G9 starts getting more "native assets".
Anyone else feeling like this "wait and see" kind of state since then? Mind you... I think it's going to be a whiiile until G9 actually starts being "viable".
Comments
Well, the details thing is really more related to the textures, which afaik there are already PAs making 8k textures for G8 and/or G8.1 anyway... same thing they did with 8.1, selling how awesome the details were when it was really just the new shader which can be applied to any figure *shrugs*
But yeah, this is not exactly a thread to talk specifically about G9, it's more about this sort of... limbo?... I feel the reveal of it created. Since it was just a passing comment how supposedly the usual PAs are already working on converters but still nothing to show for.
I'm looking at the anniversary sales with this feeling like I kinda want to get some things but then I think about G9, and not sure if I should, and so on. So I'm wondering if this is a thing enough people are feeling as well that might be actually hurting Daz sales.
I definately caught a case of the mehs. Was probably slowing down before the announcement and did slow down on my purchases after the announcement. Still messing around with my G8 assets and recently noticed that clothes "look" like they fit better on G8.1 figures.. which is good news for G9. That will be a very wierd reason to buy G9 figures.. "see the pants don't do zig zags so much around the waist..." Also not hating on G9; but I like a "toon" look to my renders and expect increased realism to be wasted on a hack like me.. then again, if the pants fit better...
So yes, I feel it too. Still watching the new releases; but mostly waiting to see what G9 actually does to the marketplace.
I am waiting to get my hands on G9F/V9 and see what the improvements are and how backward-compatible she is to G8F/V8. I do not expect problems with the clothing, but footwear and body textures may end up being incompatible. I have stopped purchasing G8F outfits, unless I find an exceptional deal.
I want to get it. I just don't want to pay $40 for it.
I'll wait and see what Michael 9 looks like.
Thankfully, Genesis 9 will be free like always, and it has a rather robust range of free starter stuff for it.
The unified mesh does have it's benefits, but otherwise I was left wondering, how was the mesh 'better' than on G8/G8.1.
Separate meshes for the eyes and mouth... If the problem was that people didn't know how not to make unintended changes to them, how are those same people now going to avoid gaps, overlaps and alignment issues between them and the head?
I haven't even fully embarked the G8.1 train yet, so the inclination to hop on the G9 one is at zero right now (and in the foreseeable and even not so forseeable future).
From a seller's standpoint, there's of course a need for coming out with building a demand for updates that allow to sell the same - upgraded or mostly "adjusted for the new generation" - products, but from a buyer's standpoint - or at least from some buyer's standpoint - the need to "upgrade just to upgrade, without really drastic changes to useability" might be not so big, when old products become unuseable. I don't buy a new fridge just because a new one with a new colour and some enhanced optics comes out as long my old one is working fine...
I wanna get this in before the thread gets locked...
I am kind of in the same boat, but climbed in for a slightly different reason.
While its not always the case, I have an eternal optimism that "newer" means "better", and it usually applies* to technological advancements. So I am looking foward to what G9 will bring to the table, especially in light of Daz5 getting closer to release.
To that end, I have pretty much stopped buying G8/8.1 stuff. I'll buy G9 and related as my fancy gets tickled, and I have my fingers crossed that Daz5 will help solve the morph loading issue (I am almost at 20 minutes load time) so I won't have a repeat of G8 with the New figure
Looking forward to seeing the improvements for G9 and V9. Still buying stuff for any generation as I will still use any of the Genesis clans. Not a believer in converting 'everything' to every other G# in existence. However I also expect that one way or another most clothing can be made to fit any of the other figures. Where there's a will, there's a way ;-)
I'm considering asking for a refund on the advance Victoria 9. Whilst Genesis 9 looks great I don't think I'll ever be able to afford a powerful enough system/ram/graphics card capable of using it to its best. If I have to reduce textures and subdiv levels to get it to fit on a lower spec system then much of the improvements are lost, so what's the point? Realistically I need to be able to render at least a couple of figures, plus hair, plus clothes and I get the feeling doing that with G9 is going to take a huge amount of resources. I 'might' be able to render a headshot of a bald Victoria 9, but that doesn't really get me anywhere.
If I was rich enough to buy a top line system that it seems Victoria 9 needs, then I would probably be looking a different software too.
Edited to add:-
I had forgotten I will also need an environment, and all these things the figures, the clothes, the hairs, the environment, need to have a similar level of detail. There's no better way of making a model look bad that placing it next to a model with much higher detail. I could use depth of field to blur out a comparatiely low detail environment, but I don't like to be restricted into alway having to do that.
We're just days away from the release [if mid-Oct means about the 15th], then we'll know for sure. Remember for figures back away from the camera some, ditch the normals. Nobody sees pores at 15 feet for eg.
I wouldn't say it's a case of the mehs for me, I do like things being released but I just don't feel very confident about how much use I will actually get from them considering the "uncertain future" of genesis 8 stuff atm (imho)
I'm really hoping they (some PA or Daz itself) are working on some sort of UV sets to make G8 textures compatible with G9 because that's a whole bunch of characters I won't trash.
Again, not really the intention of making this a thread talking about G9 itself, but to quickly answer you, a bunch of stuff like mesh collision and dformers actually work on the base mesh only and the subd just tries its best to adapt to the changes made to the base mesh. A higher base mesh poly count means much better deformations. And about the eyes and mouth being separate, the main benefit is that they won't get subdivided unnecesarily along the figure itself.
To be honest, I didn't have this issue with G8.1, you can use everything from G8 on it, except expressions but then again I almost never use premade expressions so it wasn't an issue for me. So it didn't really made me feel wary of buying more stuff.
I mean, I am expecting good things from G9 too, and hopefully Daz5... whenever it gets released... but it's been quite a bit of money invested in G8 in my case, so I do need to know I will be able to keep using that stuff without pretty much having to redo the rigging, morph corrections, weight mapping, etc, for every single thing myself or having to trash all characters textures I already have. I do expect good things from G9, just not that much.
Depends on what you make, I guess. Some works do require certain consistency you won't get using so different figure generations, and some clothing would basically need a full rework to make them fit newer gens. I tried once to convert some V4 outfits to G8 and they just didn't want to fit very well, specially the shoes and gloves. Sure, it IS posible, but that's quite a bit of time you need to basically redo the outfit and not exactly the main appeal of Daz, isn't it? Sure, I will go the extra mile to make outfits fit properly by making morphs for my characters on MD or blender but, almost making it from the ground up? Nah... don't have the time.
G8 base expressions do not work on G8.1 if one leaves everything as it was installed, but they can be made to work in just a couple of minutes.
I don't hate her but I'd liked to see cat 8 instead.
