DS 4.20 beta Question

I'm going to finally give DS 4.20 a try after all this time using 4.12. I'm going to try out the beta version which I understand can run along side 4.12. My question is how will the beta version affect my using 4.12? And say I don't care for 4.20 can it be easily removed with out throwing PVCs?

thank you

The Beta should not affect your general release version.

That being said I always make a backup copy of the installer for the version I am wanting to keep.

  • I am not sure I know how to back up my present copy.

Go to your DIM folder and go to the Download folder, then type “Studio412” or whatever your version of studio is in the search bar, (It's case-sensitive when using the program “everything”) you are looking for the .zip and .dsx files, so I'll list them as .zip/.dsx

    AlembicforDAZStudio412Win64bitPublicBuild.zip/.dsx
    GoZforDAZStudio412Win64bitPublicBuild.zip/.dsx
    DecimatorforDAZStudio412Win64bitPublicBuild.zip.dsx
    Photoshop3DBridgeforDAZStudio412Win64bitPublicBuild.zip/.dsx
    DAZStudio412PublicBuildWin64bit/.dsx

Now, these are the beta file names… the general release files are the same except there isn't a “PublicBuild” in the name… Also, you might want to get a search program called “everything” it's 200x better than window search, hope this helps!

    See http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software//install_manager/change_log_1_4_0_94#1_4_0_86

COOL, thanks for the new info, Richard!

So I append to the bottom of the account file..

    C:\Users\$USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\UserAccounts\Account.ini

    Correct?

    like this..

    [General]

    BackupPath=I:/Daz backup

    edit:

I finally got the time to check into it.

    Yes, this works fine.

Can also just add the new line to the end of the general list that is already there.

It does need to be in the correct section of the .ini file.

  • none of this makes sense to me. Richard I followed your link and it makes no sense either I don't understand it.  Where is this:

C:\Users\$USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\UserAccounts\Account.ini? Will this backup my current version of Daz Studio?

  • %appdata%\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\UserAccounts\Account.ini

should open the file for tyou if you paste it into a file browser adderss bar. However, if you have no experience working with .ini files it may be best to wait until it has a UI control or a script. It is for backing up the installers, not the installed application and plug-ins

  • What I do is rename the directory DAZStudio4 under the DAZ 3D folder in Program Files. Then I copy that directory to a different drive. I install the new version using the zip file for it on the page, https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_13176 .

For example, I found that when I upgraded to v 4.20, its IRay renders ran much slower than in v 4.16 (.50% slower or more). So I renamed the DAZStudio4 directory under the DAZ 3D folder in Program Files to DAZSudio4_v4,20 then copied the DAZSudio4_v4,16 dir back to the DAZ 3D folder in Program Files renamed it DAZStudio4. And I was back in business. That is, it worked.
