No background in render

Some time time ago I must have turned off backgrounds or something in renders because when I do render all I get is the 'no background' checkerboard pattern instead of the standard black background. I've been trying to turn backgrounds back on but can't find the option to do so. where is it?

and now my camera cube has disapeared....
The new behaviour in DS is that the background can only be turned on in the Environments pane. Set it to Backdrop, then choose a color.
I already put in a feature request to have a toggle switch for this, but they politely thanked me for my interest and seem to be doing nothing about it. If you (or anyone) feels this new behaviour is silly, I urge you to put in a feature request.

For the cube, if you have controls in a solid bar across the top of the viewport click the option menu button (the lined button next to the camera/view picker) and select Cube View Controls.
