The KMW Fan Club is STILL not dead (we just take extended breaks)

If you were around here from 2005 to about 2010, you probably know what this is about and hopefully have some fond memories.
Basically, KMWFC was a "chat room" thread of thousands of posts full of conversations, fun, laughter, stories, and some really great render contests. We even had a Fantasy render contest where we were able to get the Frank Frazetta family involved.
If you still remember us weirdos, what was your favorite thing or remember the best/most about the KMWFC?

Woken from an extended dragon-nap? That's what happens when you eat too many princesses at one go.
Yep! After you eat a few, it takes a LONG time to digest them all completely. Dragons are extremely influenced by tryptophan and princesses (and especially virgin ones) have very high levels of it. It takes years of laying on the bed of gold and precious stones to recover.

Hey BD, Great to see you :)
I fondly remember the Frazetta contest for sure. I also remember the redecorating of the 'clubhouse' ... something about pink vs no-pink? My avatar went to sleep in the corner and woke up to a reshaded world, lol.
Been busy PA-ing and not much rendering time between that and the day job. Holiday coming up though :)
Frazetta, did someone say Frazetta?
Here's my G9 Cimmerian, it's not finished yet, obviously!
As I remember it...
About 15 years ago we (the KMWFC) started a small Frank Frazetta theme render contest in our "clubhouse thread" here, triggered by a product release for Michael 3 that kind of went along with a Frazetta "theme". We had some small cash prizes to start with, but then PA friends of ours started donating products also. One of our very good PA friends actually knew the Frazetta's and contacted them about the contest and got us in touch. They loved the idea and agreed to judge the contest. That's when it took off like a rocket. More PA's and then even DAZ started adding more and more prizes to the kitty. I think by the end of the contest we had around $40,000 or more worth of cash and products to give out. It was the talk of DAZ on the site and also was being mentioned on other 3D website forums.
We literally had hundreds of entries from beginners to professional artists. It was a LOT of work and very consuming, but in the 3D art world it was one of our biggest moments and we had a BLAST doing it.
I really hate the fact that I was not around to experience this, as I'm a huge Fraz-head!
Any way of reviving this contest?
Hey, good to see you again!
I retired about a year and a half ago so I've been trying to learn guitar and back at modeling again, but this time with 3D sculpting. Been playing with ZbrushCore Mini, ZbrushCore, Blender, 3D Coat, and Nomad. So far, I like ZbrushCore (can't really justify the cost of full on Zbrush) on the PC and Nomad on my iPad. It's finally forcing me to learn anatomy. It's slow going but I think a get a little better each week. Maybe someday I'll be a merchant here again.
My forum avatar here (I call it Gremlin) is one of my completely original sculpts.
If you are in touch with some of the PA's and Forumites from 'back in the day', send them here so we can catch up on things if they want.
P.S. Neferset and I are still together!
Yay :)
The only ones I'm still in touch with are the ones who hang around here still. I used to be on another forum with some of the others but that sadly faded away.
Love the gremlin sculpt
It was a very organic thing and getting the Frazzetta family involved again would be extremely unlikely due to Frank's (and previously his wife's) death.
We could do another one, but it would never come close to the excitement and fun of the original contest IMHO.
DAZ has redone the forums a couple times and it's a shame that the thread and all the artwork is probably gone. :(
I was hoping that their kids would have taken an interest in it, at the very least to show them that their father's work, life, and the impact he had can still be felt by many of us today! But yes, you are correct, that would be a Herculean effort, and it was only a once-in-a-lifetime event that I was never able to see!
Really sucks that the old threads are gone! And yes, love the goblin by the way, ZBrush is an incredible beast!
If you mean my avatar model, thanks.
I actually did that in the old free Sculptris app by Pixologic, Inc. as my very first project to see if I could learn to use a sculpting app.
Sculptris (in case you aren't aware) was basically the predecessor of ZbrushCore Mini which is also free. I still play around in ZbrushCore Mini and every once in a while I get a month subscription for ZbrushCore, but Nomad is my new "go to" sculpting app. It's in -between Core and Core Mini, but it's only $15 and pretty great for that price. Some of my pro artist friends are using it and getting amazing results. There's an IOS and Android version now, though you have to buy it for each OS if you want to use it on both. I'm excited to see where Nomad goes in the future.
My Gremlin/Goblin avatar model is actually free out on Thingiverse. The model is completely original and no "base" model was used other than the standard starter sphere.
The STL file has been there for coming up on 3 years soon, but I just now added the original OBJ.
Here's the link if anyone wants to get it and fix and/or mod it:

Cool, thanks for the freebie, and yeah I'm familiar with scuptris as I even have the alpha build install files! ;)
But the info you gave is still needed and appreciated by others that may read this thread!
