How to choose the primary GPU in a multiple GPU build?

I have two gpu 2060 6gb and 3060 12gb

I want to use the 3060 as the primary.

The reason is because window 10, eat some of the vram, I think around 3 gb.
So I want win 10 to eat it from the 3060.

If win 10 ate the 3GB from 2060, then DAZ might not use the 2060 in case of the scene bigger than what's left.

if win 10  ate the 3gb from 3060, and the scene required vram at max 6GB, it will still utilize both GPU. cos each has 6gb and 9gb left.

So how to choose the primary GPU in a multiple GPU build?

  • Which is the display connected to? Windows will eat some memory on even the diconnected card, though.

    3060

  • Then that should be the active card. The primary will generally be the one in the top-most expansion slot (assuming your motherboard is vertical).

Hemm... I can't place 3060 on top most expansion slot, due to its size.
my 3060 takes 3 slot, covering the other pcie.
And none of the gpu can take the second slot pcie due to close proximity of other cables connected to the mobo like sata.

Thus only 2060 can be placed on the top slot, and the second one is expanded with a riser cable. So my 3060 is outside the pc case.

In this case, which one is the primary, the one connected to the monitor or the one sits on the most top pcie slot?

  • What are you wanting to do? As I understand it just selecting which device to attach to should work, since it is the memory used for display that concerns you, but in other contexts it might not be the whole story.

    My concern is....
How to make sure win 10 use the vram of RTX 3060 instead of RTX 2060.

I conclude two points about how to achieve that based on your reply..
    1. Any GPU used as the display, will be the primary.
But you also said: 2. the top-most expansion slot will generally make the GPU the primary.

my RTX 3060 is used as the display output, but it's not sticked to the top most expansion.
So will it become the primary?

  • It will be used for the display, I'm not sure if the first card (the 2060) will be used for anything else, beyond the baseline for any card.
