So you are trying to autofit a previous gen hair item to Genesis 9 and finding out that all the custom bones used to pose the hair are gone? Don't worry, I've got you covered!

    Thanks for the tutorial.

Although it seems like a lot of work just to fix an unfinished product. I think I'll wait for a real (functionnal) autofit before using Gen 9.

That's how autofit has always worked, it removes all the added (custom) bones.

Yes, but it also added new ones, to fit the object back onto the new model. 'Autofit' that doesn't 'automatically fit' and you have to do it all manually, is neither 'auto' nor 'fit', now is it ? :)
I mean, autofit from gen 3 to gen 8 for example, will actually automatically fit something meant for gen 3 onto a gen 8 character, right ? You have a box that pops up and you can select which figure it's meant for and what kind of element it is (clothes, hair...) and it does the work.
Here the hair option is missing so you have to leave it at 'none' and it just screws up everything so you then have to unfit it and work around the problem, and this helpful tutorial shows you how to do that.

You are confused. That is not autofit. Because the base 8 and 8.1 were virtually identical, all one had to do was to change the preferred figure to the other and itt was just that easy. Between two completely different characters you can't do that. You need to use the "fit "X" to "X" command and when you do that, you lose all custom bones. Apples and oranges.

Exactly. And that becomes an issue with hairs that are rigged and rely on custom bones for posing.

    You're confused : I never mentionned 8.1.

I can transfer items from 3 to 8 which includes a hair option, and everything works like a charm. I was expecting the same process from 8 to 9 which has mention of clothes but the hair option is missing.

Is this feature not an oversight ? Is it coming in the future (hence "unfinished") ? How is the jump from 3 to 8 different than from 8 to 9 ? Bones are different in all three models, no ?

  • The different types use different donor figures, like using a generic dress as the source in AutoFit instead of the base figure. Not using the hair template should not, in many cases. cause major problems.

    Cheers Toyen.

I tend to just position if fit isn't working for me. I can see, however, this being a useful method.

I just load the hair with G9 NOT selected, I lower it so that it is on the head, see if I need to scale it and just parent it.

I can then still use all the styles for the hair I am using.

That can work too as an approximate fit. For an exact fit to a character's head shape you should create a morph for the hair base (as described in the tutorial).

I don't necessarily need all of the functionality and morphs of the hair, I just need it off the face and on the head in the right place. It seems like autofit should be able to get it to fit to at least the skullcap. We can use Mesh Grabber in many cases to do basic styling. The skull cap fits but the hair does not?

If the old Genesis 8/8.1 skull cap can fit the Genesis 9 head then it seems logical that the hair should be able to follow the same path.

Just modify autofit to put the hair on the head and take it off the face. Please. smiley

Most hair I use in my projects is short hair anyway.
