Gen8 Poses on Gen9?

My Gen8 poses are not working with the Gen9 model.  Am I missing a setting or are these not compatable?

Incompatible, genesis 9 has a new rig

This is such a money grab.  It really makes me sick to my stomach.  I was ok with writing off my Gen8 models as they gadually fell into obsolecence with the idea that the Gen9 model could use the assets I had for Gen8.  I knew the new rig has a few extra bones in it so I was ready for some adjustments, but they are like 90% incompatable.  I know this post will be removed within minutes, but I just cant help express my total dissapontment with Daz as a company.

Believe clothing and hair fits to Gen9, just the poses dont work.  I'd not be surprised if someone writes a converter to go from Gen8 to Gen9 poses.  And you can't blame Daz... they've updated their product... the rig is way better (the hip and torso and glute bends are way improved)... that meant breaking backward compatibility for the sake of improved product moving forward.

I have not tried Gen8 Hair, so I can't speak to that.  But the clothing is not 100% compatable.  The clothing portions of the outfit seem to convert fine, but any attachment parts dont convert, most likely because of the new skeleton.  That means a manual fitting in order to use these items.  I really don't see a huge leap forward in the models posing.  Yes, they renamed lower/upper abdomin and lower/upper chest to Spine 1-4... but thats not impressing me.  This is Gen8.11 at best.  The main feature of Gen9 is mating Gen8 obsolete.

In the prelaunch video they talked about there was several converters for poses going to be released, and most likely one would be for release day. They showed one working. I can't speak about the JCM's if they are automatic or not but it's really just a matter of renaming the bone labels for the morph as far as I recall...why this isn't a built in function just like torso -> body/head was internally mapped for loading 8 skins on 8.1 when 8.1 was launched.

  • There have been siginificant chnages to the rigging that should improve posability - it isn't a money grab, releasing a new figure that wasn't chnaged would be a money grab. As noted, at least a couple of PAs are working on conveters and you could always create your own.

Not that I'm in the market for G9/V9 products but I do think that DAZ should show some consideration by adding Pose and Clothing converters to the base package to help people with the highly expensive migration from one generation to the next. This kind of repeated expense is what causes such bad feeling. It is certainly the reason I am holding off purchasing anything from this new generation and will possibly skip it altogether.

  • There is a clothing converter, the usual AutoFit.

Then why are there a bunch of clothing converters in the store? Autofit is only a first pass. I mostly avoid using clothing from previous generations because they just don't fit and, even after buying a couple of those Clothing Converters, I'm not really happy with the results. Usually they look fine in Zero Pose but the fit doesn't look so good when posed.

With enough research and patience (and trial/error experimentation) we can make our own clothing convertors, which work with both Auto-Fit and Transfer Utility.

I'm totally Jazzed about Genesis 9! Doesn't mean we need to abandon anything. I still use some pretty early generations still.

Genesis 1 blew me away with how much could be done with it. It wasn't perfect, but it's still awesome to this day.

Genesis 2 through 8 made leaping advances, and 9 is no different.

I think I'm going to love the FACS on dials!

Just the Free Essentials pack (all I have so far, but that'll soon change, I think) comes with a really nice setup! Free!!!

Something that can help, for those waiting for more clothing options:

    • Get whatever Fit Control packs you need for any of your G3-8.1 clothing you want to use on G9
    • Apply the clothing item(s) to the figure they were made for, then install the Fit Control morphs
    • Save as a wearable Preset

Load the wearables onto G9 and answer the questions in Auto-Fit as best you can.

    Now you'll have adjustments galore!

The new facial pose dials are going to be a trip getting used to at first, but offers Amazing Power for facial posing and animation.

I was thrilled at what I was seeing as I was playing around, and just landed on the simple expression you see above. But Genesis 9 can Really Perform!

Oh Crap!!! When I did that quick render, I forgot her on Base Resolution!!! LOL

Now I'm hoping for a pose convertor that can work across animations.

    Victoria 9

G9 pose, as I'm not going to attempt it and will wait for pose converters.

G8 (the one that appeared in almost all promos i think) bikini; it fit well, slight poke through on a breast, but that is what mesh grabber is for.

Tweaked the skin a bit, no reason was just to mess about.

Well, I have tried many G8/G8.1 clothes today. About 85% work with Autofit. Hair looks to be a little more iffy. I'd give that 75%

I was sure that in the DAZ you tube before the release of Genesis 9 there was talk of a pose converter from 8 to 9 at the click of a button on the menu?

Jay did mention a pose converter that presumably will be released soon.

I thought optimisticly maybe BVH import had improved

    silly me

I had no issues retargeting in3DX6 but zero luck getting the animations back into DAZ crying

I've never had a problem with BVH import, but admittedly I haven't done a whole lot of it.

legacy figures and Genesis 1 & 2 never were a problem for me

Genesis 3+ with the twist bones broke it

I worked around using G1 but now that's not possible

of course if you have something like MotionBuilder that's a whole different story

I admit I never tried Cascadeur which if I am not mistaken you use

  • GordigGordig Posts: 10,051

I do use Cascadeur, which disappointingly does not have BVH export, and I no longer have access to MotionBuilder. I've only done BVH import to DS on G8, and that's worked out fine for me the few times I've done it. I think that might have been with Mixamo animations remapped to G8 in MotionBuilder, though.

yes MoBu is the one thing that apparently works with D|S and not in my budget

  • GordigGordig Posts: 10,051

It wasn't in my budget either; I was in school and discovered that Autodesk gave out 3-year educational licenses, so I basically "bought" and downloaded every Autodesk product.

Tried to write a script to transfer poses and I found this, Genesis 8 have 170 bones, Genesis 9 have 138 bones, also naming is different, values in equivalent bones differ, they require calibration in some cases, so, it is quite some work.

I will be quite honest here, I love the new G9 figure and possibilities and have already experimented a bit BUT ... until a texture converter to convert G8/G8.1 AND G3 skins is released AND a pose converter that converts G8/G8.1 poses to G9 is released I'm not touching it. I would say G3 poses as well but that's no biggie as I had my G3 and lower gen poses converted already. It's tedious but I suppose if I really wish to I can convert the morphs/characters I want to G9 as well since I dial spin everything using combinations of morphs instead of using presets or full morphs. Will just have to put together a workflow to create in 8.1, convert to 9.0.

I just have far too much invested in skins and poses for G3 and G8/8.1.

  • Free pose convertor availabel at Rendo, works well, I leave a G8F invisible in the scene, then run the script. TD

    Richardandtracy wrote a script

probably the same one you found at Rendo

he also has it here in the freebie section
