Iray question

I was interested in seeing how long it took to render a scene too large for my 3060 so made one with seven 8.1 figures with poly heavy hair, all hd and textured but unclothed plus two dogs with dire wolf hair. That did the trick and the render dropped to the cpu. It took 57 of my 64 gb RAM, 100% of the i5 (10th gen) CPU and the GPU was at 5gb RAM. It wasn't a very large render, only 1500x1000 but I was still surprised that it only took 11 mins to render. I'm concerned at the amount of RAM it took, very close to my 64gb and I've decided to get another 64 bringing me up to 128.

My question: will a faster CPU cut the render time? I had intended to get an 11th gen i7 but for around the same price I can get a 10th gen i9 and I'm very tempted. My IT son is encouraging me to get it but I'm wondering if it will make that much difference. I tend to produce very heavy scenes and will spend a lot of the time rendering using the CPU. As a comparison I tried the scene with 3dl (as I've only just started using iray after getting my 3060 and I'm used to long render times). I abandoned it at 11 mins when it had barely started rendering one of the hairs.

The CPU does make a difference if you're rendering on CPU, but it's not recommended to render with GPU and CPU simultaneously because any supported GPU will render much faster than the CPU.

Thanks, Gordig. So a CPU like the 10th gen i9 will render significantly faster than an i7? I will be upgrading my CPU regardless...I'm just tossing up between the 10th gen i9 and the 11th gen i7 as they are similar in price. I don't render with GPU and CPU simultaneously but I will drop to the CPU often as my scenes are, shall we say, huge. It's not something I mind having just come from hours long 3dl rendering. 10 mins is a flash compared to that.

  • Settled on the 11th gen i7, taking into account cooling and RAM speed.
