Scene won't render in IRAY (but it did)...what happened

A bit of background...working on a 10 scene project. I was trucking along fine with rendering (in IRAY) and in the two final scenes I got a mod conflict. After reviewing other posts here I identified one of the mods that was causing the problem and I removed it.

Next time the scene was opened it complained about a missing mod (which after saving again went away)....but now the scene won't render....Well I should say it won't render in IRAY anymore...if I enable CPU it will render (it's now running out of membory)

To make matters stranger, I can open one of the earlier scenes in this project (and get the missing mod message) and it render's fine in IRAY, but if I save it and try the same thing...No IRAY rendering anymore.

Does anyone have any ideas?

  • I'm a newbie here but I'll take a shot.

When you saved your scene(s), did you also save the render settings (using the save dialog)?

Have you tried loading one of the default render settings to see if that corrects the problem?

  • Tried this...didn't change anything...Rendered fine before, but after save (and tried without rendering only and all 3 rendering and backgrounds unchecked).

    No love.

As an ex programers...what is going on that the scene is modified and now won't work....nothing of any signifigance changed....other than saving the file and the mod that was removed?

    This is hugely frustrating.

When you look at the log, does it say where it failed?

  • But the frustrating thing is same scene before save renders fine....nothing added/subtracted.

  • Out of memory?  Can't fall back to CPU. Must be a heck of a scene. I have 32GB of RAM and 12GB on 3080Ti and haven't bumped into "out of memory". I know when I load a bunch of Gen8's into a scene and deck them out I can push near the 32GB motherboard ram.

Are you using the Render Settings>Advance>Texture Compression at all?  I've seen my GPU mem use shoot up on render when it loads but haven't hit my head yet or fallen back to CPU.

I'm not the expert in any regards here, that's left to others. I'm just curious since I've had a product recently give me a render headache but it was the product only.

    Good luck

  • Sorry but you missed the point....it will render with CPU, just it didn't need to and now it does....after no changes just saving it....why???

Try to check the subD level of your characters.

I will but why would that change on a save? ( I understand that that can increase amount of memory required.)

It sometimes happens (don't know why). Even though you have e.g. sub-d 3 set and saved, it still loads with sub-d 5. In one of my scenes recently I solved it with changing from the original sub-d 3 to sub-d 2 -> then save -> then load. It was ok then. Changing back to sub-d 3 -> then save was ok as well. But not sure if this will always work.

  • So I was able to get it to render (in Iray) by changing the sub-d (thanks for the suggestion...would never have thought that would have changed) but it's wierd that it changed it during a save....I'll do more experimenting and checking that.

Anyone have any ideas on this now "bug" in saving?

If you have not set the lower SubD as default, it may change when opening a scene.
