Upgraded to DS 4.21, now can't render

I updated to D|S 4.21 for the Genesis 9 stuff, and now, I can no longer render in IRAY.  I have a GTX1070 card, and had been able to render before, but now it just says calculating for over 30 minutes to no avail.  I tried resetting my drivers in Windows device manager, but it says I have the most current driver, yet it won't let me roll back.  I thought there was a setting screen in Studio to update/configure video drivers, but can no longer fond it.  What do i need to do, other than buy a new computer?

Thanks, -David

  • Not quite the same, but my experience so far with 4.21is a DS crash every second render. Knew I should have waited 6 months before clicking the upgrade.

I havent checked yet but i would bet that there is an NVIDIa update you need to do?

  • Try right-clicking on your desktop and open Nvidia Control Panel.

At the bottom left, click System Information and check your driver version.

I'm currently using 517.48 with Daz Studio 4.21.

Weirdly DS 4.21 is the first version of studio that doesn't crash for me since beta 4.14! I created a new folder for G9 stuff and G9/V9 loads super fast BUT none of my zillions of other products are now loading and show up in black & white and I hope I don't have to reinstall all the decades of products I have! Waiting for response from tech support about what to do. But wow, without all those products installed, G9 opens super fast and the whole app runs so fast and opens quickly. Now my old beta version no longer works though. angryI wish we could could use different instances of DS for each generation or for different genres. It gets so bloated it can no longer work correctly I think.

Hmm. Are you on a PC? You updating the normal version of Daz Studio should have no effect on your Daz Beta since they should be in different folders. I mean assuming you also didn't update your beta client. Perhaps try removing the DS4.21 and reinstalling it? Eh I actually don't know if that will affect your content management if you use anything else except DIM, but if you do, you should have no trouble with the content.

I do use DIM. Yes on a PC.  The installation of 4.21 did some really weird things. I had an icon for DS 4.15 pinned to the bottom and that icon that still says 4.15 now opens 4.21. When I tried to open the old beta DS 4.14, everything became crazy glitchy, the whole UI started moving all over the place, completely unusable and all my content was no longer available, all in black & white.

  • Can I ask, what OS are you using? My GTX1060 won't render in iRay with DS4.21, but I'm on Win7 and have the most recent Nvidia Win7 driver. But that was last updated last year when Nvidia support stopped for Win7. If you are in the same position.. that's it. The last working version of DS is your 'stay with version' with that hardware configuration. Regards, Richard.

I think the icon has the version of the app that had when the icon was created and does not update if you change the app my icon still says 4.12 but i am running 4.2 etc

Definitely sounds like you have some streams crossed because the regular installer should have absolutely no effect on the beta version - unless there is some conflict with newer runtimes which could explain it, I guess.

The pinned icon should refer to the new location after client update and most likely just needs updating, so it is otherwise working as intended. You should also have a desktop icon unless you removed it in which case it should be still in the start menu. You can just unpin and repin the task bar one in which case it should show the new version, but I don't think the issue is there.

If you right click the 4.14 beta icon and choose properties, does it still refer to "daz studio4 public build" location?

If you right click the regular DS (4.21) does it refer to "daz studio4" location or to somewhere else?

Edit: Hmm doublecheck you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 or at least 2015-2019 Redistributable installed. Assuming you use win10/11 though one should come with the installer.

In order to install a different version of DS alongside another version, you need to install subsequent versions to a different place, such as a custom folder. Don't allow any additional versions to install to the default. The best way to do this is to install manually, rather than letting DIM or Daz Central install it. I have the newest beta, the newest public build and 4.16 installed on the same drive. Theoretically, I can install as many versions as I like, so long as they don't overwrite the last version (so I make a specific folder in my Program Files and install to there for each version).

Good practice if you ever think you might need or want to roll back: as soon as a new beta or public build is released (whichever you like using), download the installers for it and back them up. I have quite a few versions backed up...all the way to when Iray was first introduced. Then, before installing a new version, you'll still have the previous version at least to fall back on.

Yes I'm on Windows 10, it recently updated so It's definitely up to date. I do have several folders of installed content on different drives but everything worked until I installed 4.21. The folders with personal content, testing and my personal presets work in the content manager but everything installed through DIM is broken. Hopefully tech support will get back to me. Right now im just installing what I need through Connect then uninstalling when done. But I've just been playing with G9 stuff. I have sooooo many morphs I need for G8 and below, and I like to be spontaneous  and use everything available and not have to worry about searching and installing through Connect. It sure runs a lot faster without all that content though!

Hmm weird. I've separate content folders, too, and this has never happened to me. Mine are even in different locations than the program root folders. I once managed to destroy the dim manifest file after which I had to reinstall all content to get dim up to date (albeit there might have been a fix to this) but it never affected any of the installed content. I mean as long as you don't mess with the runtime/geometries, runtime/textures and the data folders under your content paths, you should be fine. You should be still able to move the content loaders elsewhere (within the same root path structure at least).

Well, hopefully you find some solution to the problem!

    Hello All,

Following Dim Reaper's advice, it appears that I had a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay outdated NVIDIA driver setup.  After installing the new driver and a few crashes, I'm back up and running.  Also, going forward, I will make sure to download and do a separate DS install for specific versions.  I had that for both 4.11 and 4.15.  I think the install of 4.21 borked those, as any DS version icon I double-click to run now runs 4.21.

    Thanks, -David

Really glad to hear that you got DS working again - nothing more frustrating than having something new and not being able to use it.
