Texture maps looking bad in render

In texture shaded mode the texture map looks fine, in iRay preview or iRay render it looks terrible, posterized

Each plank is a sperate part, each uses the same texture map, the map is 4710 x 1307

The map color gradations are smooth, look rough and posterized in the render

iRay renderer and iRay materials

Tried reloading the map, tried a tiff and jpg, same results

Tried IBL and scene lights
