Why Can't I Get My Library Back?

Yep, it's me again with the old DAZ library issue. This time, though... it's weird.

I'm aware that to get my library back these days I reimport user data. Which is kind of nice, and it has let me get my library up and going on other computers. However.

1. I just upgraded from Windows Home to Windows Ultimate last night.

2. I installed DAZ 4.8 using the install manager.

3. I had to unlock the external library folder in question because for whatever reason Windows decided it had to be kept locked for reasons of false security.

4. Just had to set all the files from read only to normal.

5. I tell DAZ to reimport user data over and over again. it starts to go through the process and just gives up. And I got nothing.

I have no idea what I can do to fix this.

While I don't know the answer, I would take a quick glance at your UserData_1.dsx file that you are trying to load from and make sure that it looks like what you expect, and that it is where DAZ Studio expects to find it when you are trying to restore from it.  (I have written down in my notes that you need to put it in the runtime\support folder within the first mapped native DS content folder, so also double-check that your first mapped native DS folder hasn't changed.  I did once mysteriously have it moved farther down the list of folders, not sure if I did something to move it by accident or what, but apparently it can happen.)

Also you said that you got your library up and running on other computers, so if for some reason your UserData_1.dsx file has been lost or damaged along with your backup of it, you could recover to some extent from one of those other computers.  (But obviously try to get it working normally first in case it's fine and that's not the issue.)  If you aren't certain what is in the file, you can also compare against your other computers to get a rough idea of the file size and contents to determine if that is/isn't the problem.

Sadly you ... lost me. I'm in the woods crying lost, cuz yeah.

I've uninstalled, manually deleted, reinstalled, and really wish I'd never upgraded right now as I'm back at the "I hate DAZ" point of working with this program. It's like content manager isn't running correctly. Which means... I have to reinstall my whole stupid computer I guess? I really have no idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's start with the first few steps, then based on your answer, go from there.

Do you have a backup of your UserData_1.dsx file? (this is the file that gets read when you select "Content DB Maintenance" > "Re-Import Metadata...", and I assume was one of the files you copied over to your other computer when you installed DAZ Studio and your content there.)

From the Content Library pane's menu, select "Content Directory Manager", then click on the '+' in front of "DAZ Studio Formats" to expand it, and look at the very first listed folder.  What folder is it?

Exactly what folder are you putting the UserData_1.dsx file in prior to reimporting it?  It should be the \runtime\support subfolder within the folder listed above.  For example, see my screenshot showing where I put the file and what my first DAZ Studio folder is (Note that you will have a different folder than I chose, the point is just that whatever this top folder is is what you need to verify.)

     NO!  Don't do anything yet!

Most problems with the CMS DO NOT require reinstalling everything...especially content,  Most often Studio doesn't even need to be reinstalled.

Now, let's back up a bit...did you do a fresh install of Windows.?   Did you let it sit and complete all 100+++ updates it will need to do, before installing ANYTHING else?    Or was it an upgrade in place install...which means it will only need to go through about 99 updates....(seriously, my son just did a fresh install of Win7, this past Monday...187 'critical' updates....it took over 12 hrs to download and install them all).

What 'securtity' software are you running?

    Hi to you both.

This is some excellent advice. But what happened over here is this:

When I upgraded for some stupid reason Windows was trying to point things to Windows.old. Daz, Firefox, you name it. I just had to wipe my drive. Now everything works.

Thanks guys for trying to save me from a lot of drama. It's too bad I had to lose just about everything to get my library back, but that's Microsoft for you.

I have the same issue only on a brand new computer.

I had saved my complete previous runtime from folder "My DAZ 3D" to an external hard drive.  My new install is on its own separate hard drive "F" with the program installed on prgram files drive "E" as my "C" drive is a 128 GB solid state drive and reserved for Windows and other programs that have to be installed on "C" such as Poser.

Can I just copy my old runtime into the new runtime on drive F and then rerun the Metadata or am I missing a step?

Also when I reinstalled DIM I saved the old profile from Roaming\DAZ and copied it back there in hopes that by doing so it would prevent having to re-download and install everything all over again.

I haven't run DIM yet and wanted to check with you experts first to make sure I did not miss any steps as I have not done this before...

    Thanks.

My DAZ library is on an external drive, "F" as well. When I reinstall my computer fresh (essentially getting a new computer) I tell DAZ to point content to that drive and then reimport metadata. Brings my library right back. This also worked with a brandnew computer I got last month (that died last week).

However, for two times now counting this last time, if it's a fresh install overwriting an old windows we get this .old problem. And man is it getting old.
