First image is the Region Selection highlighting an object. How do I turn off the highlighting feature?

The second image is how my image is suddenly displaying, what happened and how do I get back to a preview look?

I'm not sure you can turn off the surface highlight for region or surface selection - you can, in the Draw settings pane, for the node selection-based tools.

Click the little sphere to the left of the Camera/View picker button and select texture shaded for draw style to fix the second, I think - though that may not be the issue, the display doesn't look quite as I'd expect.

If you have applied "shaders" to everything, then they will not look "as expected" until rendered.
