Top Corner Icon Labels Disappear

Can someone explain why I have no labels on my content icons? There should be labels like "Material" or "Attachment" or "Set" but I had to search long and hard to find any icons with any labels. They seem to be created with labels but they quickly disappear. This can be a problem because I save Scenes and also Scene Subsets and the icons are identical so with no label, it can be difficult to know which is which. Is there a way to get the labels back and is this something everyone experiences or just me?

  • The Content Management System, which gives the content type, is off or the database has gone bad.

How do I fix that, Richard?

  • Try Start CMS in the Content Library option menu (lined/hamburger button in the top corner orr ight-click the tab).

  • Actually, if you have some labels showing (I missed that in the first post) then that can't be it. Are the files still where they were originally placed, with their original names?

I rarely leave products in the folders where DAZ or the PA thinks they should be because I have my own folder system. I didn't realise that would affect the lables though. I think I would rather have my own system than sacrifice it for the sake of icon labels. Poor programming though, I think, becaue I know from many discussions here that lots of users prefer their own way of organising content.

However, I don't understand why that should affect the scenes or materials or poses I have saved myself. They don't have a pre-destination because they are newly created. Yet they usually start with a label and then that disappears. I'm not sure how or when it goes away but it always does at some point.

[EDIT] I had a look for content that I know is exactly where DIM put it because some things I just don't need to organise away from their original places. Those icons are also missing labels. I stopped and re-started CMS ... no difference. I reset the database - again, no difference.

[EDIT 2] I just tried a search using the content database (as opposed to "File") and I do not find anything. Seems like my database is either not running or has gone. Is there a way of checking?

    Update:

Something I did restored some of the icon labels but it happened slowly and I didn't realise that it was happening in the background (there was no indication on screen). It seems that those resored are for the content that is in the original install folders. Content I have moved - for example I put all DAZ Original Characters under a separate sub-folder - have not had the labels restored.

  • It isn't poor prgramming - the database needs a way to identify each file, and it uses the name and relative location.

There are two ways to organise your files and keep the CMS data intact - either move/rename using the right-click menus inside the Content Library, or leave the files in situ and create links (by copy/paste in the Content Library or using a script like http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/specific_ui/create_asset_links/start ). The link method has the advantage that it will not be affected by an update as long as that doesn't add, move, or rename any of the user-facing files.

So you seem to be saying that anyone who, like me, has moved content around (without having to resort to scripting which is certainly not my forté) will have this CMS mismatch? I'm surprised I'm the only one who has mentioned (unless I missed it) but then maybe people just don't look at those labels. I tried using the right-click menus as you said but it is much easier and more effective to do it with Windows Explorer. I'll just have to live with the lack of icons.

And that still doesn't explain what I mentioned above about content files I have created such as scene subsets or poses or materials. Those lables disappear too.

The script exists, all you have to do is run it. You can also create links and move fiels manually, it's just more long-winded - and what you are doing in an OS file browser anyway.

I thought you said they had coem back? I don't know what would have caused that if they were still in the place to which they were saved.

When I ran the database reset it seemed to bring some icon labels back but they started to disappear again. They don't seem to stay around for long. I have my library the way I want it so I'm not going to spend all that time moving products within DAZ Studio or creating links (although I will try that script for future reference). For a start I have no idea where the content was placed by DIM so I would probably have to reinstall everything.
