Creating my own graphic novel using Daz with Comic Life...missing are "balloons" for impact (like a fist connecting with a jaw with the caption "pow" for instance) and "motion lines" to illustrate that a car or airplane is speeding, or puffs of smoke illustrating car exhaust...

I couldn't find a Comic Life forum, I'm pretty sure such special effects could be added from within Comic Life, I'm just not sure where to look...

Are there any Comic Life alumni 'round these parts?

Yes they do but upgrades are quite sporadic.

While Comiclife is a very good program, it does have limitations. To have those other things like speedlines and so on, would be best with either Clip Studio Paint, or to be postworked in after.

  • I'd grab something like Photoshop Elements and then simply add all of the comic illustrations afterwards.

  • I'm sure Comic Life had an 'impact' balloon - It might be that it's a speech bubble but you can move the 'tail' inside the balloon and it disappears.

For motion lines - yeah, you need another program.

  • Not quite motion lines, but I think the Motion Blur script comes close...I think I'm getting the hang of it. The attached render displays our heroes' futuristic flying vehicle speeding into action!

For "impact text", you could just use the "lettering" option in the bottom panel. Change the font and resize to fit your need.

I guess you already tried the manual? https://plasq.com/manuals/comiclife/3.0/comiclife-3.0-gettingstarted.pdf

Page 12 seems to show the type of stuff you are looking for?

But yeah, for layouts and ballons, Clip Studio's better. They are switching from Version 1 to Version 2 next year, though. But in any case, you can try the program for free for six months. https://www.clipstudio.net/en/

Full version 3.5.21 updated two months ago, iPad version 3.5.14 updated about a year ago.

They also make Comic Draw for the iPad, another program geared towards making comic books.

  • I'm doing the same thing with DAZ and Comic Life

What I really wish for is for speed lines for movement and impact lines for punches and stuff
