How to install the 4.21 beta and not overwrite my current DS install

I have a perfectly working version of 4.15 and want to stay with it untill I decide to adopt 4.21 or later. I want to check out G9, so I decided to see about installing the 4.21 beta. Can anyone tell me exactly what file I am looking for in DIM, or what to install manually from my product library to try it out and not affect with my current version of DS.

It should be easy in DIM,  the beta is called Daz Studio 4.21 (Os name) Public Build +Beta+    if you search for Public build or Beta in DIM, it should be easy to find.

There are aso Beta versions (which need to be installed if you use them) for varous plug-ins - Photoshop and GoZ Bridges, (Optitex) Dynamic Clothing plug-in, Decimator are the ones that spring to my mind. Again a search fo "public build" should find them all in DIM.

Then you may have other plug-ins you want to use but are not version specific, e.g. Ultrascenery, USC Accelerator and UltraseceneryXT; Mesh Grabber; Thickener; LAMH. DIM normally installs them to both the Base and the Beta releases, but if you have never installed a Beta version of DS before then you may need to reinstall them. (There are doubtless more of these than I listed, my list was just ones that I use most often).

  • I have full production versions of DS4.10, 4.11, 4.12, 4.14, 4.15 and 4.21 running alongside each other. To do it I do a manual install. However, first I rename the directory of the most recent version ( eg 'Studio 4.15' as 'Studio 4.15a') this stops any risk of the uninstaller for 4.15 being triggered and finding the program I want to keep. Then I run the install package, and get it to install into a directory called 'Studio 4.21' (or whatever version). Having done that I go back and re-name the 'Studio 4.15a' directory as 'Studio 4.15'. Now I have another full working version alongside the others. And 4.21 can't even render on my Win7 machine with the latest correct drivers, but I've got it to test things on. Regards, Richard.

Thanks for the info. I thought I did that exact thing with DIM when I tried to install the 4.15 beta alongside my 4.12 install and it overwrote my 4.12 install, so I was trying to avoid that again.

Thanks so much for that description! For some reason, I can't find the betas anymore in DIM (which I used to get), and now I couldn't figure out how to try out 4.21 with G9 without risking my current working installation. With your help, problem's solved!

So if I rename the DAZStudio4 Public Build folder to something else, can I run DIM to install the 4.21 beta? I would do it manually, but I am worried about content file paths since I use DIM to install content

  • FSMCDesigns: I'm sorry, I simply don't know. I have never used DIM or DAZ Central. I prefer to do it myself, that way I know what is going on. I suspect that it would work, but never having tried it, I can't say from experience. Regards, Richard.
  • Tsroemi: hope it works for you as it does for me. Regards, Richard

Thanks Richard. that is what I figured as well. I used to install everything manually, but tried DIM a few years back and have been using it since. I had file install path errors from the saved scenes I had before using DIM and I am trying to avoid that again if I install 4.21 manually.
