Pirate ship that looks good in a close up?

Every ship I've ever bought from DAZ has aweful textures.

They look good if you are doing a long shot but if you put a character on them the textures are low res garbage.

The ropes look fake, the side pannels look good on the outside but low rez on the inside...

I've tried to retexture some but the results are questionable at best.

It's frustrating...

Does aybody know where I can find a ship that doesn't fall apart in close up?

  • Have you checked out PW Pirate Ship Poseidon ? While not perfect the textures are not too bad depending on how close you want to be.

It's definately one of the better options, but is flawed in many ways. Look at the loft where the steering wheel is... the use of metal...ugh... throws the whole thing off...

If I could  re-map it ...maybe.

There is this one https://www.daz3d.com/pw-customizable-pirate-ship by the same vendor. It is smaller and more realistic than the Poseidon (I don't like the massive back end of that ship).

It is also one of the few ships with a modelled interior.

The textures look good in close up, but at a cost. The model consumes a lot of RAM and VRAM, so you would likely need to optimise, or at least strip out what is not in the shot.

  • I know the set itself is expensive, and they usually have a sale coming up around Thanksgiving, check out the Treasure Island set at Kitbash 3D. That ship is awesome, and if you're doing pirate stuff, there's so many other things within the kit that look great as well. It's well worth every penny. And getting it into Daz isn't that difficult. But I get it if not as their sets are an investment.

  • I have the Tartarean Pirate Ship...and it does better than most ...but when you get up close it crumbles...

Here is an example....If they had some higher res textures...

I tried this one first....the stearing area has this really fake looking rope texture that just kills it...I'm thinking of using the polygon editing tool to remove it and kit-bashing a new fence.

Have not tried them, but other assets in the past. Usually their stuff is really good and free. May need some work to get them into DAZ. And not a real pirate ship.

LukeA/Sveva offer the "Jolly Roger" and "Pirate Ship 2" over at Renderosity which be might worth a second look.

  • As a close-up boat for on-deck shots, 3Djoji's Armed Virginia Sloop (https://www.daz3d.com/armed-virginia-sloop) is good. There is a pirate version.

I cannot imagine pirates surviving in much bigger ships for long anyway, too big a crew for the economics to work well for an extended period.

I have pulled one of these in to DAZ....and it's actually pretty good!

I just have one question for those of you with some Blender smarts....

How do I import this in to DAZ retaining all of the object groups?

It comes in as a single mesh...and in Blender... it is a group of individual objects...

I would like to retain the individual objects if possible.

I'm not a Blender expert myself and am using version 3.3.1

There are at least two possible options

    1.     You can select one of the objects in Blender in the Outliner and export to OBJ  with the option Object Properties ► Limit to Selected Only checked.
Repeat this for all parts and import all in DAZ.
    2.     If you want something like a figure (where the groups are converted to bones) you can disable the above mentioned option and export everything with the option Grouping ► Export Material Groups
To get the individual groups converted to bones you need to use the pane Figure Setup in DAZ and create a new figure by importing the geometry using the context menu Add geometry
For more info on the process see here in the official documentation
