What is the difference in term of function between SubD and Smoothing Modifier?

It seem both for smoothing things.

    AFAIK SubD adds polygons to make a thing a more specific shape - uncovered, out in the open. Smoothing modifier helps an object (hair, clothing) conform around a specific object - covered, hidden.

    Smoothing does chnage the shape but without adding any extra mesh, SubD does both. But Smoothing Modifies also have the collision feature, which SubD doesn't.
