If it weren't for that price tag I'd imagine it'd be a good alternative to Blender for hobbyists but...  Hard to beat 'Free!'  after all, even if it's one of the steeper uphill climbs in the 3D world. And oh boy would I get chewed out for saying that - but I stand by it: Blender's a climb.  Not Maya or Houdini levels, but still a climb!  So respect to the folks who are able to learn it, because I can't xD

Honestly, I'm more interested in learning Houdini than Blender, even though you basically have to rewrite your brain to use Houdini effectively.

Speaking of Octane,  saw they're making KitBash3D coupons quartly instead of monthly now.  Makes sense to do, but aw man xD

Yeah, it's disappointing, but I can't fault them for making that decision. I should probably spend some more time with Octane, because right now the only reason I'm keeping my Octane subscription is for the free monthly KB3D sets. I love Arnold, but the lack of GPU acceleration is a bummer, and it's so much more expensive than Octane that I'm still using an unlicensed version.

Had Octane crash on me WHILE SAVING AN IMAGE earlier today and I was just like agggh..  How does anyone use Octane in production when even now at its best its still so unstable?   I don't really want to move on from it, but as a secondary engine or if I did make a jump,  what would I pick up...   Vray's too expensive for my taste,  going back to Redshift is a possibility (Great compatibility with Cinema after all, since Maxon owns it now),  I always have Cycles to fall back on even if I find working with its nodes to be tiring compared to Octane's,  Arnold or Corona...  I'd say U-Render but they shut down development recently...

Like I said, I love Arnold, so I'd suggest giving that a try. Cycles became unusable for me for reasons that are still unclear after a lengthy back-and-forth with Insydium's tech support, which is why I initially tried Octane, then Arnold. I've also never been able to get Cycles renders to look as good as Octane or Arnold. Maybe I could apply some of the lessons I've learned from Octane and Arnold, but not if Cycles crashes keeps crashing the way it has been.

Also, I started converting Urban Sprawl to Arnold, and I knew it was going to be an undertaking, but it's so much more than I expected.

Finished and posted!   I tried to list everything I used in the scene - even the barely visible things!  I just like being thorough like that :D

I had to dig up what pack the scroll on the table was from,  I had a few products that included scrolls but I needed to find the exact one.  Texture name on the paper directed it back to the Alchemy Lab.  *Edited to add Ancient Offerings,  totally forgot :O

    Some post-work in Resolve too.

That looks very good... nice composition and lighting.

Thanks. I may get started on a Shadowrun animation soon.

    ...looking forward to seeing that.

I've been  involved with Shadowrun since First Edition in 1990.Was involved in th local Missions group for several years until; Covid put the kibosh on that. I have most of  they put out including all the 3E "worldbooks". and all the 5E.material on PDF.  Actually been in the process of "retooling" an old 3E campaign to 5E.

The storyline and setting I've been working on is also influenced by the game setting.

Again love those effects, wish I could use the more pro level software, but due to economics, I pretty much Have to stick to Daz/Blender and Iray

Nowadays Blender is pro-level, so unless there's something  (Integration, workflow, just the way it 'feels', etc) that  Maya/Max/Lightwave/C4D is offering you that Blender isesn't then you've got no trouble there.   Myself I still can't really get around some parts of the 3D kitchen utensil turned software and no matter how much people try and convince me otherwise I still find it too alien and uncomprehensible.  I'm also kind of stubborn,  I've been using Cinema 4D for ten something years now and it'd take a lot to get me to want to look at another program as my Main Tool cheeky  I know that with the right amount of effort I could probably learn it but starting from scratch - literally in the case of my content libraries -  is just too much for me to want to try right now.

I know there's really no reason not to learn Blender, but I just hate using it. So much of the interface feels like it's different just for the sake of being different, and I started using C4D because I found it the easiest and most enjoyable to use out of the alternatives.

I still remember the old pre-1.8 interface,  oh man it still gives me nightmares

Cinema's my go-to for the same reason,  been using it since 11 was still new,  got it at half off because of a promo they were doing where owners of  'qualifying products' would get a big discount. Carrara was one of those products.  I've been with it ever since, and I can whole-heartedly say that paying to keep up with the updates was far more expensive than their new subscription model ever would hope to be - trying to keep up with perpetual upgrades was what stopped me from moving forward and stuck on an increasingly archaic R13 Visualise.  ngl though that I adore seeing the R12 box on my shelf :D

If it weren't for that price tag I'd imagine it'd be a good alternative to Blender for hobbyists but...  Hard to beat 'Free!'  after all, even if it's one of the steeper uphill climbs in the 3D world. That said, the interface is kinda why I've yet to move up to 2023 even though its got cool new features and is PROBABLY more stable with Octane (But maybe not?).  The thought of re-learning the interface and then re-assembling my custom layouts again and then migrating all of my lib4d's to the new Asset Browser... I'm lazy :D

...I pretty much avoided Blender until 2.81 when they finally added a pointer driven workspace rather than  having to do everything on the keyboard.  It would get to the point with all the key combinations it felt like I was playing "Twister™" with my fingers on the keyboard, and then I'd forget a key combination for a specific operation and have to go look it up. I suppose if you first started in 3D modelling with such a UI (like most Blender users) would seem intuitive, when you come form the "other side" it feels clunky and cryptic.   I primarily looked at Blender for modelling as it is far more stable than Hexagon and doesn't freeze up or crash in the middle of what I am doing. Being that I finally decided to throw in the towel on W7 (Nvidia's move to a new driver in the latest beta was the last straw), I can continue on with Daz as well as move to Blender 3.x.

You can do what I've been doing and just use Arnold unlicensed until you can afford a license, then simply re-render to get rid of the watermarks. Alternately, you could get Maxon One so that you get the RedGiant plugins and ZBrush along with C4D and Redshift

Oh, I thought it just stopped working after the period ended :o   Humm, well I'll give that a try then. See if I can't familiarize myself with it some.  Does Content/Asset Browser thumbnails render entirely black when you save Arnold models like it does with Octane?

Main reason I've not gone with Maxon One is because I don't use After Effects.  Once way waaay back I did have their lens flare plugin and used it in Photoshop a lot, but that's not an option no more and I can't get my old copy of it to work anymore either.  Now, if their plugins worked in DaVinci Resolve then they'd have my attention!

prepaid service locked me out of my account because I typed the one-time code incorrectly too many times.  Gonna need to call them tomorrow to enable online login again.  Its not my fault the code was not working.

I've been using it for 8-9 months. I don't know if checking "skip license check" is part of that, or if you can just use it as much as you want as long as you're fine with watermarks.

Not in R26, at least. That might just be an Octane thing, because I didn't have that problem with Cycles either.

Uuuuuuuuuuuugh. I got most of the way through converting Urban Sprawl 3 (and all the way through four Urban Future sets) before I realized that the bump3d node doesn't work the same way as bump2d, so now I have to go back and change all of those nodes in order to get proper normals.

    Evaluation purposes basically :o

Mm, well that's how it is in R23 so it might be a version thing.  If later versions don't need custom made thumbnails for non-native shader objects that'd make sorting things a lot easier. Takes a few hours to render thumbnails for all the objects in the KitBash collections xD

Yeah a handful of the "Magic Bullet Looks"  plugins work in both C4D and Resolve, but the vast majority of the Red Giant plugins are After Effects exclusive.

So far it seems like it, but still ... D:

Unrelated:  Found I've been getting excellent results using the File-Export-FBX  to get figures out of D|S with fully functional morphs buuuuut  there's no way to fix the joint orientations which are all reset universally every time.  Mmm always one thing or the other isn't it :P

*Edit to add that the "Fix Joint Orientations?"  popup does nothing. The figures still import with bad joints.  :(

Through the Export Rules menu in the FBX Export options,

though with the MilDragon here it seems to only be taking the base morph into account since none of the head's morphs are present despite them being included in my export rules.  Also once its imported, it ends up looking horribly deformed:   If I reset the bind pose, then the mesh is now 'de-synched' with the Base Pose in the pose morph tag and so anything I do - scaling it, fixing joint orientations,  etc  -  will have terrible results.  If I leave it as it is then its this deformed mess.

Wanted to use something old / old'ish,  and I picked the Blood Sands Arena prop,  never used it before.  <Weary> at the dragon joints being all kooky and not much I can do about it because of the quirks of the Pose Morph tag... Disabling the Skin so I can fix the Joint Orientation makes the model reset to the tag's Base Pose

Not really liking the sun glare there,  it feels too strong.  I like the lighting and there being a glare,  just not the glare's strength.

Very smart of the dragon to aim at wooden attackers, they'll burn nicely without any of that stinky, yucky oil that renders from immolated fatty bodies.yes

Non-Complaint:  I've discovered non-black coffee.smiley   I've drunk black coffee and tea my whole life, only using sugar and/or cream when restaruant coffee was disgusting (such as any black coffee from Starbuckscheeky).  For some unknown reason while ordering more coffee from Amazon I spied with my little eye, a cheap offering of "Coffee Mate: Chocolate Crème" and included a dispenser of it in my order to try.  Mmm… chocolate… mmm…heart  Instructions call for 3/4 teaspoon, but the jar's small hole for dispensing of the delicious smelling powder, is apparently designed to vomit clouds of chocolate dust in unpredictable amounts & directions, but still sort-of toward your spoon.frown  And how the hell do you calibrate your eyeball to know when the ragged pile of brown dust in your spoon, (and half that much on your kitchen counter), is 3/4 full?  So, I just shake the jar until until I think it's at least twice as much as specified, then stir it into my coffee and pass into heaven as the overdosing sweet aroma wafts into my face.  Mmm… chocolate…heart  Of course, I'm sure that if I did some research there would be someone who would point out the suspicion that Coffee Mate is an unregistered bio-weapon or at least a poison whose negative effects are swept under the rug and someone is making a fortune selling adulterated chocolate nose powder.indecision

'Nother non-complaint:  I just realized that by using that flavoring, I can stop buying expensive coffee and start using boiled dishwater.  Just like Starbucks.devil

Well now! I guess I'll be making them wood-characters instead of humans  -  it'd save me a lot of time knowing that I have a very limited wardrobe selection for my soft and squishy bipedals :P

i've spent 40 minutes talking to the card's customer service to dermine that the cell phone network is slow to send text messages and that my phone is delivering the passcode to another location that I am not used to seeing.

Why does there need to be any humans at all?  I'm sure dragons are capable of taking selfies.  Get themselves into a nice sexy reptilian pose with sparkling teeth & claws... click.yes

@Gordig  -  how much do you know about C4D Cloth?    I only have the most basic of knowledge about it which is why I was super happy when I got one of Swidhelm's dragons to work with it,   but today I was going to use his Millennium Dragon wing prop  buuuut...  I set things up just as I did with the wyvern but its belting to places it shouldn't.  I'm bringing it out of D|S though,  maybe it'd be better if I fired up Poser11 and see if it'd export out better from there ...
