Considering Genesis 9 - Is it backward compatible?

Having downloaded the Genesis 9 Starter Essentials, I'm looking at the Genesis 9 Head and Body Morphs and Victoria 9 and Michael 9. The question is: are they worth the expense? Importantly, is Genesis 9 backward compatible with cothing/hair designed for Genesis 8? And what about clothing/hair for the previous generations? Next are poses. I don't suppose that Genesis poses will work on Genesis 9, but what about Genesis 8 poses? And what about character morphs? Can character morphs meant for Genesis 8 be applied to Genesis 9? (I suspect the answer is "No.")

I suppose I'm asking whether there is a good, true, and compelling reason to upgrade to Genesis 9 having spent not a little money on Genesis 8 figures, clothing, and poses (male and female)?

Autofit does work with clothing from G8. I think shoes are troublesome still using this method.  There have been some issues with hair fits but there are solutions in various threads that address that.

Not out of the box but there are options.  Zev0 has released a G3 and G8 to G9 utility.  RiversoftArt has a bundle coming that will include older genesis versions.  RichardandTracy released a freebie for G8 to G9.

Can character morphs meant for Genesis 8 be applied to Genesis 9?

Actually they can with a little work. Bringing a Shape from G8 over to G9

The release of G9 has raised many questions.
Wondering whether G9 is worth buying is a bad question, because if you keep using G8, you will keep buying G8 characters.
The key is whether you want to get better quality work, and whether you want to do things that you couldn't do with G8.
Then there are the habits you get from using G8 characters, and the automatic things you learn that save you time.
But I think if you like 3D, you'll end up using G9, because the new characters will eventually convince you with their greater realism.
However, I also think that the type of scene you like to create can be important in this choice. If your favorite renders are rural scenes where the characters are not in the foreground, then G8 or G9 are equivalent. On the other hand, if you like to do close-up shots of your characters then you should really use G9.

  • For me, the main issue is the fact that I have a lot of G8, and G8.1 clothes (Male & Female) that I would like to use on G9. Does this mean what has been acquired over the years is gone?

Nope, everything you have bought will still work with the characters they were meant for, nothing is taking them away - In time there will be conversion utilities that help in converting the older products to G9 if one thinks it's necessary.

So far, I'm not seeing G9 as being 'better quality', except maybe when doing face-only portraits, which I have never done in the last 20+ years and thousands of renders.

  • Seems I was missing morphs... It works now so far

  • Many thanks to one and all for your observations. I appreciate that you took the time to reply so thoughtfully.

  • Moved to the Commons as it is not a Daz Studio topic and closed as there are already several theads on this.
