OBJ Clothes will not fit

Okay..I have been going crazy here. I purchased a dress from turbosquid https://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-model-ancient-greek-woman-dress-1916472 and I am trying to make it fit onto G8.1 but NOTHING I do makes it fit at all. I import it as an object, at which point the dress shows up at around knee level, I move it up, as you can see in picture two - it does not fit. I then use Transfer Utility to try to make it fit - it goes back to around knees and now I cannot move it at all. I have tried rigging it, I have tried the transfer utility, I have tried adding dforce - nothing makes this dress fit. At my wits ends now. Also I am COMPLETELY new to Daz/Blender/3D so if this is an easy fix forgive the ignorance.

I THINK this may work.  Use the translation dials to move the dress to fit the figure as closely as possible.  EXPORT this and overwrite the old OBJ and then delete that from your scene and reimport and run the utility to see if it now stays on your figure!

  • Please put the Viewport in Smooth Shaded drawstyle if you are shwoing a nude figure.

RAMWolff is correct - the Transfer Utility will ignore any transforms applied to the Target object.

Okay so I tried that and it DEF helped but it still does not fit the figure. There is still some skin pocking through and the sleves don't match up with the arms.

    My bad!

It doesn't look like it was made for any of the Daz figures, so it's not really surprising it doesn't fit them perfectly...

Clothing sold in the daz3d store is specifically designed and sized to fit the various Genesis figures depending on generation.

Nothing on the turbosquid page suggests that dress was design for a Daz 3D character figure.  You're expectation that it would just "fit to" the daz model is not reasonable. It does NOT  work like that.

Countless hours are added to the creation of actual daz3d clothing to make it work as well as it does in DazStudio, from modelling to the making of JCMs for the figure rig.

So bottomline,  it is not an easy fix.

Most people do not realize how much work goes into rigging clothing to fit and follow figures. Daz prices are VERY low considering that effort!

I've thought about making clothing now and then, but... man, it's daunting.

Oh for sure but my problem with Daz clothing is that it's very skimpy and sexualized. There are very few dresses that are not. I was going for something that is less sexy and more historic and this dress was perfect. I did not realize how much trouble fitting it to the figure would be. I have tried making my own clothing but wow is it INTENSE!

  • My impetus was exactly the same as yours: Most content is highly sexualized, no matter how contextually inappropriate.

It's not that hard if you take the time to learn just enough Blender to move the dress into place over your figure with proportional editing and changes to the transform pivot point. Doing a cloth sim will help, but then you'll have to smooth things out with the Smooth tool in Sculpt mode. Believe it or not, if you put in the time and effort to be reasonably fluent in Blender, you will eventually find this fun and relaxing.

I beg to differ in that I have lots of clothes in my Content Library that you might see on the street anywhere and NONE of them were bought as over-priced OBJ files from the likes of TurboSquid. It is not often I feel the need to defend DAZ but they do make an effort to cater for different tastes and needs. I am not at all interested in historical fantasy but I get notifications of promotions of historical clothing very often. Even I have a set of Roman era clothes that I picked up on sale at some point. I also have a medieval dress that found its way into my library for the same reason. So unless you want all your characters dressed as nuns (I also have a nun's habit in my library, incidentally), I think your complaint is a lttle off-target.

As for making OBJ files fit - I've also toyed with the idea of making clothing myself and, as has been stated earlier, it is quite a daunting undertaking once you look into how it gets done. However, if you are really serious, you could look at Marvelous Designer which allows you to create an Avatar from a DAZ figure (G8F, for example) or, as was also suggested - just export your DAZ figure to Blender and make the clothing fit before importing back to DAZ Studio.

And that is most likely the reason why you don't see it.

Those of us who really pay attention to this genre do, as clear as day. There are many, many assets that are really wonderful, but ultimately unusable because of the context. Things that would not have flown in the 1950s, let alone the Dark Ages. It's very frustrating.

The 1950s were the dark ages - I remember those years. cheeky

But maybe I am more focused on what DAZ describe as contemporary. Most of my scenes are modern and I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've used historical costumes. Nevertheless, I still disagree with the contention that non-skimpy clothes are not available in this store.

Whilst it is very true that a lot of the female clothing in the store is sexualised, it is not true that all of it is. I also like historical clothing, and whilst some of the male clothing is fairly accurate, this is less true for female stuff, particularly in the medieval/pirate era, as a lot of that clothing is really only suitable for fantasy.

For greco-roman female dress I would recommend the following:

    https://www.daz3d.com/sy-dforce-roman-clothing-pack-genesis-8-female

Some of it is shorter than what would have been worn in that era, but the longer dresses are more appropriate.

the Draw sculpt brush in Blender is pretty good at getting cothes to fit to figures before transfer utility.

out-the-box transfer utility will never look good because transferring weights are imperfect and will usually need weight mapping and JCMs.  Howeverf, if you get mesh close to the source/template before transfer then the result will be good enough for some poses where you cant see any of the flaws.

Yes, of course, not all of it is sexualized. But it is enough to be frustrating.

But on the other hand, one of the things that impelled me to learn Blender was to be able to tweak existing things to suit my needs, so All's Well that Ends Well, I suppose. That's why my initial comment was for the OP to realize that Blender could be equally liberating for them, too.

In this YT tutorial Parmy shows how to create clothing morphs in Blender to adapt the clothing to the figure mesh and its' pose, so it fits:
